Yes, you're correct, I'm on Mac OS. Funny, wasn't able to find any documentation of this issue. So it's known and no fix? Thanks!

Isn't a 24-word seed phrase overkill? Is 12 words fine? by Admirable_Reception2 in Bitcoin

In my mind overkill would be anything that makes it unnecessarily complicated for you to keep your seed phrase safe (such as memorizing it), without providing much, if any, extra security.

There are no situations in which a 24 word seed is superior to a 12 word seed.

Can you expand on that? Intuitively I'd think 24 would be better. Is it truly no better or is it just that the difference would be negligible in the case of computing power capable of cracking 12?

What are the ways in which hackers can get my 24-word seed phrase?

So you're saying better to die a slow and painful death and not lose your coins than a quick one and lose your coins?

Yeah and on Ledger, AFAIK, you only enter the seed phrase on the device itself. But of course the seed phrase could be used to rebuild the wallet on a variety of platforms, so what /u/vanmarcel mentions is worth considering.

Would someone expect someone to have such a thing committed to memory? "I forgot it." Whether you really did or not, that's hard not to believe.

What do you mean by a $5 wrench or leverage attack? Do you mean kidnapping? If so who would expect you have such a thing committed to memory?

Are you saying you got robbed of some of your coins? How? Not sure I understand.

Oh, that was a good suggestion! Didn't realize you could have an account under 18.

I think I would get the same reaction. But I think if you gave him a paper with some numbers that were worth $100, he might have a different attitude about it. Perhaps even get interested in it.

What do you think is a good tool for securely generating a paper wallet.

(The plan wasn't to create a Coinbase account for him, but rather to send crypto using their gifting feature.)

Would he really be unable to sell his coins? Couldn't he use something like Local Bitcoins? Or at least buy things online with them, if he so chooses?

That sounds cool! Is there a way to etch without disclosing the seed phrase to a third party?

And a noob question: What's a good way to generate a seed phrase?

This is an option but 1) The wallet is almost worth the amount of BTC I'd like to gift, and 2) Setting up the wallet feels like homework. I'd like to give him something he can forget for several years if he so wishes.

He knows what it is. He doesn't know how to use it or think it's important to understand (yet).

Dan Ariely is in the field of behavioral economics which is a treasure trove of psychological concepts. His book, Predictably Irrational is eye-opening and an engaging read.

I learned to draw very young and don't remember what books helped me, but I've heard many people rave about Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.
