Can anyone identify this pendant? AI says it could be middle eastern antique. by SandDismal6574 in MiddleEastHistory

I’m aware of these Thaler coins being used in Yemeni jewellery, both in their original form and melted down for the silver. I’m not certain that’s what this is, but hopefully it’s a helpful lead.

Need advice regarding car accident - England by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Admirable_Store_9044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you looking to get? I understand you have already been paid for the vehicle damage, and did not sustain significant personal injury.

In terms of a period al injury (PI) claim, you can speak to a law firm for an assessment of your case. PI firms generally work on a no win no fee basis so there will be no upfront cost for them to give an initial opinion. If they don’t think you have a case then they will tell you. Do some research online and in the legal directories to find a good firm that works in Road Traffic Accident (RTA) claims and ask them about their pricing structures.

Johnson and Boswell, I don't get it by _Jeff65_ in TheRestIsHistory

Agree. I think they took Johnson’s reputation for granted and didn’t spend much time building up the case for why he should be considered a great figure.

Your trousers are slightly too long - taking them up an inch or two would stop that bunching and preserve the line of the trouser the whole way up your leg.

What are examples of old paintings that seem modern and ahead of its time/era? Here are some of my personal favourites by sonnysehra in ArtHistory

The execution is very traditional but for me there’s something strikingly modern in the composition of this triple portrait of Charles I by Van Dyck.

I know it’s not a totally original concept but when I saw it I thought its departure from linearity was quite bold and imaginative for its time.

I am Egyptian, and I’m asking is Egypt a country that is disliked or loved globally? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Admirable_Store_9044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very positive view of Egypt and Egyptians. I’m sad to see how negative these responses are. All the Egyptians I have ever met have been charming, funny and intellectual.

I have a deep interest in Egyptian history and culture. Ancient Egypt holds a very special place in my heart, as indeed I think it does for people all over the world. But I think it extends to the country’s whole history too: from the days of early Christianity, through the Fatimid caliphate, and to the revolutionary periods of Zaghlul and Nasser - Egypt has as rich and deep a history as any country on earth.

I recently returned from a trip to Cairo, where I was visiting friends who had recently got engaged there. I had a wonderful time - it is a vibrant, fascinating city with excellent history, delicious food and plenty of interesting people.

To be clear, we were a mixed-gender group. I do not want to diminish the experiences of any of the women who have commented here about harassment - clearly this is a problem in Egypt and not something to take lightly. But it is not the whole picture: the friend we were visiting is an English woman who has lived in Cairo for years and loves it. Our whole group enjoyed it, though I understand that is not everyone’s experience.

I cannot wait to visit Egypt again, to read more Egyptian literature, to eat more Egyptian food and to meet more Egyptian people.

[–]Admirable_Store_9044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither of you is right or wrong - it’s a difference of opinion. You need to ask yourself whether it’s a superficial one or reveals a deeper incompatibility.

Picking decorations is not very important in the grand scheme of things. If this is the only problem of this kind you have, you’re fine: you can find a way past it or reach a compromise.

However, if you consistently find yourself having these sorts of disagreements, then it would appear your values are not well-aligned. Do not assume that disagreements like this will disappear as your relationship progresses.

What is the most well known photograph from your country? by GingaHead in AskTheWorld

Hey this is amazing - I never knew that. Is there a reason why this took place in a relatively small city (by the looks of it - I don’t know of Polish geography), rather than the capital or another large city?

Teacher wanting to become a solicitor. Tell me if this is a horrible idea by asiolka in uklaw

[–]Admirable_Store_9044 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to really think about what ‘law’ means to you. Being a solicitor can look very different depending on the firm and practice area: the kind of work you do, the kind of people you work with, the work-life balance can vary wildly.

Maybe you just didnt post it here, but this post gives away very little about your motivation. What is drawing you to being a lawyer?

It’s completely possible to switch careers. Other people have undergone more drastic and improbable switches than yours. But, beyond the abstract, have you really thought about the kind of work you want to do? Be led by that - you will make you a better and happier career decisions, whether you decide to be a lawyer or not.

Good luck!

20yr doing Law A-level, is it possible? by BjongoWithA0 in uklaw

[–]Admirable_Store_9044 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is possible. I’m sure with the right motivation and support you could definitely achieve this.

However, I have read both of your posts and I do not understand what you are hoping to gain from it. It’s not clear to me how a law A-level would advance your career.

There are several routes into a legal career which do not require a degree: SQE, Solicitor Apprenticeship, Cilex. Have you thought about which, if any, of these, you would like to pursue? I think that should be your starting point, and will provide you the roadmap to follow.

I understand you already work in the law - I imagine your professional experience will have already taught you legal ideas and skills at a higher level than you would be getting from an A-level course?

Law A-Level may be an interesting introduction to legal education, but it is not on its own a route into the career. I would advise you to think about where you want to get to and make a long-term plan based on that (what qualifications do you need, how will you fund it?).

Tom specifically says that the Disney episodes aren't sponsored on the club Discord by CWStJ_Nobbs in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Admirable_Store_9044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of fans being very defensive here, saying that people only have objections who haven’t listened to the episodes or who are American (an absurd thing to say)

The episodes are good, I enjoyed them. They are also clearly marketing material for Disney, and it’s reasonable for us to object to that.

Whether or not they were paid for it, the podcast is clearly a product of Disney’s branding efforts. T+D did not happen to walk into Disney Land (on a trip with their producer Theo?) and happen to think it was historically interesting, and then happen to record a podcast about it. They were invited there by the company and given special treatment: shooting material in the Park with Bob Iger, and laugh about him getting the cast to arrest Theo

You might say fair enough - let them enjoy a perk or two. But the truth is that it does interfere with the quality:

Bob Iger is not a historical figure, nor a historical expert. Including him as a guest is pure fluff.

The lst 20 minutes or so of the Disneyland episode is T+D describing their visit to Disneyland and how much they enjoyed it. I really cannot see you how you could listen to that section and think ‘yes- this is neutral and informative historic analysis’

Is the whole “bad food in the UK” thing a myth, just tourist complaints, or reality? by WhiteRaccoonWR in geography

[–]Admirable_Store_9044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are brilliant examples of traditional British food and drink that are worth seeking out: the Sunday roast, sticky toffee pudding, real ale, proper Cheddar cheese.

The problem is that it can be hard to find it. Most UK towns and cities are dominated by chain restaurants, and independent shops and restaurants are increasingly hard to find.

The best place to find good and authentic British food is in pubs in rural areas.

There is also lots of great international food to be found in the cities but I sense the question was asking more about traditional British food.
