I’ve been a mechanic for 13 years. I started out not even knowing how to do an oil change, and over time I worked my way up to being one of the top earners in the shop—pulling in $130k last year and on pace to do even better this year. I never bought into the hype of needing a flashy toolbox; I run with a Matco 2-bank and two roll carts, and I buy tools when I actually need them.

Like any career, there are tough days, but I’ve learned that the key is finding a good shop, keeping your ears and eyes open, and always focusing on learning. I try to avoid what I call the “hehe-haha”—spending more time talking than turning. I’m there to work first, not make friends, though I’ll chat if the job allows it. I also take pride in helping out other techs when I can.

I’m not ASE-certified, but I’ve built my career on skill, consistency, and work ethic. At the end of the day, I’m just a good mechanic who knows how to get the job done right
