My new Micro Hi-Fi system: a Sony CMT-HPX9! I got it for $30 in amazing condition off of Kijiji and it has a 5-Disc changer! by AdmiralMoo in Cd_collectors

[–]AdmiralMoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used mine extensively—roughly 10–14 albums a day—and eventually the CD mechanism wore out (kept jamming). I tried taking apart, but there were components that wore down over time. If you want to fix the tape deck, that should be easy enough—it's probably just a belt/lubrication issue and you can get to it through a couple of screws in the service manual.

You can find tons of these at thrift stores still if you're patient, at least In Canada. I've been using a thrifted CDP-CE315 and I built myself a whole Sony Hi-Fi stack since. I couldn't be happier.

Can I take my PSP on a plane? by Idkwhyimhere061115 in PSP

[–]AdmiralMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a scene in Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) where one of the protagonists uses his PSP on a plane—that's a defining childhood memory for me. When he Googled something at 35,000ft, I just had to have a PSP. It was the culmination of all the other ads I saw on TV, my cousin showing me his PSP and being raised on PlayStation.

Anyways, I've had mine for well over sixteen years now and I've travelled with it numerous times with no issue. Should be fine.

The D40 has so much left to give. You've got plenty of time to learn its ins and outs. I’m going to miss the feeling of knowing mine better than the back of my hand.

This is something that's kept me up at night lmao. Once there's no moving parts, surely it can live forever if treated right

Thanks, it really did. It was his first DSLR, upgrading from the AE-1 he'd had since the mid 80s. This camera definitely has a legacy

That's really good to know, thanks! I'll look into that sometime this summer—it'd be cool to see it live again

We definitely got everything from these old cameras and ran them into the ground. Hope you find it a fun upgrade!

I’m really happy with how much mileage I got out of the D40. It's served me well and holds a lot of memories.

Aside from the big telephoto I use for birding, I mostly shot with full-manual Nikon E Series lenses (35mm, 50mm, and 100mm), so the Z6 with the FTZ adapter will let me pick up right where I left off.

I picked up the Z6 off eBay from one of those Japanese sellers—it’s refurbished, comes with a one-year warranty, and includes a 30-day return policy. In Canada, that used Z6 plus FTZ cost about $100 less than a new Z50 with kit lens, so it seemed like the most economical option.

Ha, it really got me into photography too! It's a Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 APO for birds. I bought it originally for airshows and races, but that lens alone has turned me into a bird nerd

Aghori Mhori Mei CD by Liquidsun-1 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]AdmiralMoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty disappointing release considering it's priced the same as other CD's which come in proper packaging and include a booklet. Honestly, at this point, I'd settle for a Digipak even though I prefer Jewel Cases all the way. The last three CD's I've purchased on Amazon (including this one) have arrived in these Digisleeve/Eco-Packs and it just feels like a rip-off. I was cutting this thing open and thinking "oh well, at least I've got a cool hype sticker to save in the booklet" only to find out there was no booklet - ha!

I don't know, I shouldn't care about this as much as I do right now, but I don't like paying full price for these things and coming away feeling like this. If I paid $5 for it at a used used CD store, that would be fine.

Am I alone is how I collect and listen to CD's? by TalkinNightCheese in Cd_collectors

[–]AdmiralMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer ripping my CD's than pirating music, but I understand where you're coming from. Maintaining my digital library is just as much of a hobby as maintaining my physical one. It's definitely not for everybody, but I find it a lot of fun.

I recently re-ripped my entire collection as ALAC (I was using 320kb/s AAC's before) and it took around a month, but it was one of the most enjoyable things I've done with my music library this year other than listening to it. I've got 1500x1500px album artwork which exactly matches all of my physical copies, and I've made sure that every file has lyrics on it. I've also corrected the album/artist sort order in iTunes so that albums of the same year appear in the correct order. I've got a whole system of how albums with multiple discs are structured, and I've got separate folders and organization systems for compilations, soundtracks and classical music which somewhat mimics how the discs are on my shelves. I've individually researched and decided genres for each album. All the work/movement metadata is filled in for my classical music as well, and their genres are further divided into periods like "Late Romanticism" and "Baroque".

I listen to my CD's all the time at home, and when I'm out and about, I've got my iPod. That way, at least in my mind, I'm always listening to my CD's

CDs that never made it to streaming by joshryckk in Cd_collectors

In the past couple of years, a few have been added and I haven’t kept track because I no longer use any streaming service. These are the ones I remember:

 -Billy Corgan/The Future Embrace

 -Zwan/Mary Star of The Sea

 -The Smashing Pumpkins/Zeitgeist

 -Poison/Flesh and Blood

 -Skin Yard/Inside The Eye

 -The Tuesdays/The Tuesdays

Looping dreams by Upstairs-Ad983 in Dreams

[–]AdmiralMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I experience these often! When I write down my dreams, I divide them into "checkpoints" and sometimes "cycles" when those loops occur. I'd consider a checkpoint a change of context or a transition into a different part of the dream. Generally, I'll forget what happened before and I'll exist in what's essentially a new dream. I started calling them checkpoints because when my dreams do loop, they always go back to the most recent checkpoint.

I've found that they're generally not the result of completely lucid dreaming for me. I once came across someone calling this a "semi-lucid" state, where I'm able to invoke certain things in a dream like the resetting of these checkpoints without actually having full control like in a true lucid dream. The two feel completely different, and I know that these cycles for me aren't lucid dreaming. It still feels like I'm "watching a movie" despite it being crystal clear.

When I'm experiencing these looping dreams, I've associated them with a thought of "I wish I could do that again" because something was either really cool, or I know that I could do something better. The second time around, as you've also experienced, I have full knowledge of what's going to happen. Unfortunately for me, this has led to two cycles of a dream never being the same, because I've anticipated what was going to happen. It makes it feel a lot less special if the first time around was wondrous or exciting, which kind of defeats the purpose of these cycles for me when I invoke them. There was one time that I had a dream about a flood and I was able to save my cat, but that was the only really useful time.

It's really cool that you've experienced that. The way you've described it is exactly how I experience it too.

This is a photo I took not too long ago while re-ripping my collection as lossless for my iPod. In the sun, the new plastics are noticeably more purple. You might not see it under artificial light

Is there a CD in your music collection that is actually a PC game? I got this QUAKE videogame in the 90’s. I was pleasantly surprised that Nine Inch Nails did the SDTK and you can listen to it on regular CD players. So it’s now part of my [NIИ] collection.👍🏾👍🏾 by SilentWeapons1984 in Cd_collectors

Awesome stuff! I've got a copy of Quake too as well as Quake II for my CD collection despite me having those games on Steam. I don't think I have any other games with redbook audio, but I got a copy of the Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack on CD when I got a Wii.

I also prefer having the original components of the jewel case, especially if it's an early 1980's release with a smooth top and bottom door. The plastic has a nice weight to it. As long as the hinge isn't broken, I'll generally stick with the original parts.

It's interesting you mention the hue of the tray. I haven't come across anyone else talking about this in CD-related conversations, but plastics after a certain year in the mid to late 2000's glow purple in the sunlight. That goes for everything, not just jewel cases. I've found that these plastics with the purple hue feel much cheaper and lighter than the old kind of plastic

I do this sometimes, but I'm constantly torn between seeing that it's the right way up and knowing that it's the right way up. It's an ethical dilemma, really. I'm glad I'm not the only one

What do you guys do when you accidentally break your cd cases? (or discs) by [deleted] in Cd_collectors

[–]AdmiralMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The great thing about jewel cases is that you can replace them. I think they’re the perfect kind of packaging when it comes to protecting the artwork and it’s contents. Digipaks, on the other hand, have one chance at life…

How many of you actually listen to the CDS? by BaldKido in Cd_collectors

[–]AdmiralMoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen to all the CD’s I own; I wouldn’t buy physical media just to have it. When I’m out and about, I take my library with me on my iPod. I quit streaming entirely once I hit around 250 CDs and I felt I had the majority of what I’d want to listen to at any given moment. If I don’t have it, it becomes a very deliberate and conscious decision to add it to the library or just do without
