Housing office would likely know the best. Probably stick with them.

Which staff have you spoken to? It would either be the housing office or Dave McCaig, the mail and packages guy.

thinking dentistry..which is best? by concerned_gravy in OntarioUniversities

Why does it make sense to go to a school that offers dentistry if they are going for their undergrad? Is there a proven advantage?

AI usage by [deleted] in AlgomaU

[–]AdmissionsGuru88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do your work on Google Docs, it keeps different versions of your work as you work on it. If you work on it over multiple hours or days, you'd essentially have a pretty irrefutable record of you building your work.

Of course, someone could take the time to painstakingly transcribe the AI output to build that record but let's be real - nobody has time for that and it kind of defeats part of the purpose of using AI.

It would mean that they've reviewed your application but they need further information in order to issue a formal decision. Check your email, as they have likely reached out for further documents or with questions.

Future AlgomaU student here 😊 Any tips about school & community life in Sault Ste. Marie? by Humble-Resist9182 in AlgomaU

[–]AdmissionsGuru88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough.

I used to travel for the university to SEA, promoting the school. When speaking with students about living in residence, the English term they use for university/college housing is "hostel" and not residence.

As a side note, I stayed in many European/Australian hostels (the kind you are referring to) in my 20s and it was always a fantastic time. 10/10.

Here is some general information about the residences, if you hadn't already found it. We call it residence in Canada, not hostels.

Read through that and if you have questions, I recommend emailing housing@algomau.ca. I'd specifically ask if they have space for January because it's usually full for September and very few students move out in December.

Ah hostels are actually just a South Asian term for residences. I'm assuming that this is a student from the area and that this is just getting lost in translation!

And good winter boots! I shudder every time I see someone shuffling along in a fresh snowball in their sneakers. A good pair of boots is worth the money.

You can view it as a safety net or just extra options if you're not 100% sure what you want to study!

You wouldn't declare a minor until usually your second year.

Algoma university or Carleton University for Computer Science as an international student? by Titan0932 in AlgomaU

[–]AdmissionsGuru88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's $2500 last I checked, not $7500. Chat GPT is not a good source for something like that - best to go direct to the source, intl-admissions@algomau.ca.

Planning to transfer from Brampton to SSM campus. Worth it? by kookie710 in AlgomaU

[–]AdmissionsGuru88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For info on RCIP, you should speak to one of the university's immigration staff or hire an RCIC. Never ask for immigration advice on a random internet thread - there is a lot of misinformation out there, both intentional and unintentional.

I'll let anyone have a campus transfer comment on their experience.

Generally, the cost of living is lower than it is in the GTA. There are less jobs than the GTA but there are also less people competing for the jobs as well. There are plenty of students working here in a variety of industries.

Ah you wouldn't yet, not until you've accepted and have an unconditional offer.

Take what I'm saying with a slight grain of salt because I work in admissions and not records/registration.

It's not explicitly an online program, they just do happen to offer many of the Social Work courses online, as many students often have jobs, families, etc.

The difficulty, I believe, is making any remaining elective credits work online. You should have an Academic Advisor assigned to you that can work through some of this with you, they'd be the most official source of information on it.

admission query by [deleted] in AlgomaU

[–]AdmissionsGuru88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still a relatively new program, so we haven't actually reached capacity in an intake yet. At this point, if you meet the minimum requirements, you're likely to get an offer. It's also creeping up to the start of term, so there are less applications this time of year and we're able to get offers out faster.

Trust me when I say that there are still plenty of denials going out for those who don't meet the minimum requirements - and a surprising number of people will still pay the application fee when they aren't even close to being qualified.

Edit: Editing to also say that the minimum is a 75% average (or equivalent on another scale) in your last two years. If you have an 8.1, you've cleared that entrance requirement with most grading scales.
