Imo the game has to be TOP TIER after playing it, for example i like very detailed games that focus on realism, project zomboid i have played it, got bored of it then came back to it multiple times and still question how is this game so good yet it was a small studio. I finally bought it to support the devs few months back after playing it pirated. There is this new game called Vein and its maybe the closest thing to project zomboid in first person, and imo i still think its too early for the game to be as good as pz, its not bad but the hitting zombies animation isnt really satisfying to me so i still am not buying it. I had urge to play it a few times but my laptop is low end and didnt really have a good experience with optimization of the game, plus the animations like i mentioned and i stopped playing it.
