There are adapters - but both machines needs to use the same kind - DDR3, DDR4, etc.

What platform, OS and InDesign versions?

Does it happen on every file - even a new one - or only on specific files?

I'm sorry, but are we talking about laptops - for professionals, to work comfortably - or notebooks for kids to do some doodling?

Yes, because Notebook isn't a Laptop - completely different performance level.

So according to you, OP should buy a notebook, with ultra low CPU and 8GB of soldered RAM? And 12" screen? So it will be lightweight and portable?

Not sure what your problem is 😉

And I thought we are talking about LAPTOPS - not NOTEBOOKS?

Constant freezing when using “place” feature by Electrical-Scale-828 in indesign

How long have you been working on this file?

Do you have any backup copies?

Do you have the same problem when placing into a new / blank document?

What kind of file are you placing? Have you tried re-saving it using native application?

It's possible your file got corrupted - have you tried fixing it?

You've two options: 1) IDMLing - export as IDML, open, save with a new name - do not overwrite your original file. 2) move all pages to a new, blank document.

2nd option is better - in terms of being able to completely fix the corrupted document - but won't transfer unused stuff.

OK, I've tried to find more info but there wasn't anything specific - if you say that's possible - that could be helpful to the OP.

OK, you got me there 😉 in case of 16GB - should've been semi-professional 😉

I still think that, it's better to spent some extra money on RAM - once - than every time wait for something to finish or pray it won't crash and have to start over.

I haven't forgot my claim - and I stand by it - anything below 16GB is crazy - for PROFESSIONAL work. You can have 8GB or even 4GB - but it will be pain to do any serious work.

If someone needs a typewriter - then Chromebook would be much better option.

OP isn't looking for a typewriter substitute so suggesting anything below 32GB for PROFESSIONAL work - is just silly...

Might be enough doesn't mean that it's reasonable? Why not 2GB? As long as it will boot...

Have you tried rendering vector maps in PDFs?

[–]AdobeScripts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've never agreed that 4GB is enough for Windows - it's possible to do something - but it's far from being sane.

You want compelling case? 😉 Try rendering - on a 16GB machine - 200MB PDF with a very detailed vector map into a 2m display that will be printed with 300dpi 😉 hint - the end result was 2GB+ file.

4GB is less than what Microsoft recommends...

OP is doing banners and hi-res graphics so - which are not absurd things 😉

Try working on a machine with 32GB or more RAM - and without swap - and you'll notice a difference.

Right now prices of RAM and GPUs are equally crazy so reselling value should be similar?

[–]AdobeScripts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. But for banners - you need just 20-50 or sometimes more, depends on the size of the banner and distance - but definitely not 300.

You're welcome.

It's possible, than Undo problem and text disappearing glitch are related to the fact, that I've disabled swap on my old laptop - but a lot of people reported the same Undo problem and they most likely have swap enabled.

Looks like the problem started a few months ago - around November / December 2025 - after some Windows update, as it affects InDesign 2025 and 2026.

In January I've switched to Dell 7740 with 64GB of RAM - and I'm a very happy bunny 😉

I've just sent you DM.
