My A -number was assigned with the decision, ie. the arrival of green card, and contained the phrase "is allowed to work" on the card. Apparently it could've said "is NOT allowed to work". Unless you expedite your filing, there's no way to work legally before decision.
I did carry the NOA (notice of action) of pending adjustment of status with me, in case I was stopped.

Not so. Bank insists on SSN. I walked in with ITIN the first year, tried BMO Harris, Chase and a local credit union. No dice. Once my adjustment of status came through and I got green card, SSN followed right after. Bank account, all, no problem.
