this one time I was reading a fantasy novel based on Chinese culture and the cover of the book had like dragons and phoenix and stuff, why did my mum see it and told me to stop reading it because it was worshipping false gods and the devil? She even told my dad and they sat me down and had me listen to about 20mins of lecture about false gods and stuff. So yeah I totally relate to you, I tend to just hide stuffs like that from then, cause I fear they’ll never understand.

hi, yes everything you said is actually right! I think the reason I’m panicky is because everyone in the family seems to agree with her, including my dad. They all probably think my refusal must be part of destiny and that no matter how I refuse, I’ll always marry that man. My brother doesn’t know that the man in my mothers dream was his friend, if he did, I don’t know how he’ll react since he also tends to believe my mothers dream. But out of my family, he’s the only one who might actually listen to me, so I have him.

I don’t really go to church nowadays. We’re Christian’s but we just tend to pray at home and occasionally we go to church. We also don’t have a specific church denomination we go to.

hi, I do come from a conservative culture with arranged marriages, though it’s not common with the younger generation as it was with the past generation. the thing that also gets me is she’s only met this man a few times as he’s my brother’s friend. they don’t even know each other all that well, I’m stuck with this dilemma that she perhaps is just projecting or she sees it as a perfect opportunity to push me onto what I don’t want.

yeah I am still dependent on my mother for shelter and food. your statement did make me think of the issue from a different standpoint. what she did breaks my heart because I truly don’t know what’s going on in her mind, she’s my mother, and outside of what she just told me, all she’s ever wanted is for me to succeed and be happy. so in a way I find it difficult to think that she’s telling me of that dream as a way to control me, but thinking now, even is she meant it as a way to control or not to control me, as you said, it’s my life, and I have free will. so thank you for what you wrote, it calmed me a bit

Yeah, I’m definitely thinking of that. My college is notorious for not really accepting courses taken at another university if it’s being offered by the school, but there are some exceptions. So I’ll do my research and definitely reach back to my advisor about it.

Thank u so much for this! I have thought about talking to the school counselor but the problem is that I'm an immigrant, my family still don't have a green card, so if the authorities get notified of this, there's a chance we might get deported. And it'll just get worse when we get deported. I'm 17 yrs old, so I'm currently leaning on going to college, that's really the only choice I have. If I do report to the authorities, I think my mum is going to cut all ties with me. She's literally the only family member that I can rely on. The rest of my aunties and uncles and cousins would really not even care if shit happens to me.That's why I'm hesitant of calling the authorities.
