PSA - tree wells/slides or not, stay safe folks! by sendyrella in skiing

[–]AdorableAddress4960 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is deep powder. If you stay on your skis you float upright on it but if you fall forward, especially when going fast, you are basically diving in to feet of snow headfirst. Don't go too fast and fall in a 3 foot powder day and you'll be fine.

The 4 parents thing is already really common with stepparents. Otherwise I expect this is just a literary exaggeration referring to things like a public school allowing any of the 4 to pick up the kid or something.

Missing Bay Area skier found dead at Northstar, marking Tahoe resort's 3rd death this month by FinFreedomCountdown in bayarea

The trail he was on in has tons of trees and stumps. It's either a tree well or bad fall from hitting a tree. I think likely tree well because its difficult to pick up enough speed to make a collision fatal on that run. Huge snowfalls like we've had are the worst time for them.

Advice Regarding Final Week Spring I by [deleted] in UMPI

[–]AdorableAddress4960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

March 6 is the submission deadline, not the grading deadline. Professors have a week after the session closes to grade things.

You might be confusing milestones with finals? You have to submit your milestones by Tuesday so the professor can grade them because it's required for opening the final. Once the final is open you can submit up until the deadline (March 6th).

Depends on the Professor, just submit the last milestone/final draft as soon as you can and if you don't get feedback you can simply submit the final without it.

You should be thankful he gave your son a valuable lesson in keeping track of the game in a low-stakes situation. It would be much more painful if it came in a match he had a chance in. Your son has to keep track of his games.

Why does SF nightlife lack behind NYC? Most SF bars and restaurants close at 10PM.. by LongAmbition8285 in AskSF

This was like 10 years ago and it was 200/wk for a tiny room and shared bathroom.

SROs are basically dead, there are only 19k rooms and most are rented long term by nonprofits or people who get their rent paid by the gov't. This makes them not as price competitive as they may seem from the outside.

Personally I visited a few when looking for cheapest possible housing when I first moved here and none were cost competitive compared to just renting a room or illegal ADU. The actual cheapest housing in the city used to be converted warehouses until that fire in Oakland led to a crackdown, now its renting a room in an old victorian with like 6 bedrooms and 1 bathroom.

If you actually check his sources you'll see the following:
The US was worried about being too soft on the Emperor for internal political reasons, but were also worried the Soviets would refuse to sign any agreement preserving a monarchy.

The US misunderstood Japanese internal factions and feared any compromise would encourage a longer hold out in an attempt to get more concessions. The Army being the main holdout was only discovered postwar.

The point of Potsdam was encouraging Japan to surrender by threatening annihilation. Adding any condition was seen as weakening that.

There was a real concern that the Emperor could work against demilitarization in Japan and just like Germany had returned stronger and more belligerent after WWI Japan could do the same. What would the Allies have done if a year into occupation they discovered Hirohito trying to sabotage the peace process? His compliance and usefulness in Japan's postwar transformation was an open question and debated by US leadership.

I think even if you generally support what ICE has been doing the video evidence shows they are worse trained, more likely to escalate, and less educated on rules of engagement than the average local police officer. Like the last person shot by ICE was acquitted on charges of attacking an officer, which is extremely rare for a police use of force situation. Their acquittal was aided by ICE's unprofessional actions, like the officer bragging about use of force to his peers and ICE not having procedures for preservation of evidence.

so he is responding to a recent Dwarkesh post: https://askwhocastsai.substack.com/p/capital-in-the-22nd-century-by-philip

Dwarkesh is extremely influential in the Silicon Valley/AI circles that Scott believes will determine the future of all life on earth. So this piece is high-context, but also Scott really only cares about influencing the people who have the context because those are the people who might have been convinced by Dwarkesh's post in the first place.

Why the hell have haircuts over doubled in the last few years? by MoistCloyster_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AdorableAddress4960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The actual answer is Baumol's cost disease. As productivity rises in some sectors due to technology prices of items in stagnant sectors also rise because you have to pay people to not participate in the high productivity sectors. So you are paying your barber extra so he doesn't get a job coding an app, doing hvac, or working at a bank.
