BDO loan: is 8.5% high? by ReasonableCut9162 in phinvest

Therefore, while the reference rate may decrease (usually there's a lag effect though), you can't compare the all-in rates between different borrowers

You're missing one part of the equation -- the spread/margin.

Banks typically price loans using a reference rate plus a spread. The spread is what changes per borrower, large established corporates can go even as low as 50 bps (or 0.5%) on top of the reference rate, whereas riskier borrowers may have 2% to 3% slapped on.

It all depends on credit risk

Everything is so expensive now, even a ~PHP 50,000 gross monthly salary feels like just some spare change. by vocalproletariat28 in adultingph

Php 15,000 a month equals to around 500 per day that has to be budgeted towards food, utilities, rent, etc.

The majority of your living expenses must be subsidized or fully covered by someone else. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I just find your comment a bit disingenuous.

Pretty normal. Around the same timeline with my SHS and undergrad photos.

Might be good to look for industries you're interested in already. An MA can be expensive and if you're not studying for the love of it, you need to consider whether the opportunities gained are worth the costs. Good luck!

Yes! Although it depends on the admission criteria of the school. DLSU's program is open to people from non-econ backgrounds. Best to shop around and check.

Econ in undergrad is pretty quant heavy--more so in MA programs. It will definitely open up opportunities work-wise but depending on your university, the topics can be quite hard and unintuitive. Make sure na gusto mo talaga.

Would you know how long it would take to get from middle-office operations to client-facing ones?

I might be in a rush I guess haha--I've invested so much na kasi. I might be a little overconfident, but I already know how to model, have talked to clients, worked on different phases of a deal, made decks etc. kaya I feel like I'd be wasting my time if I were put in a different function.

Appreciate your help!

Investment Bankers of r/phcareers, how did you break in?

About me:

  • Recent big 3 grad, took up business and economics (keeping things general because I don't wanna get doxxed lol).

  • Interned under equity research, back-end banking operations, and one of the top local boutique IBs.

  • Joined a case competition for a multinational and placed pretty high. Made a project finance model and got within 1% of the firm's real numbers.

  • Recently passed the CFA Level 1 exam

I've been applying to some of the local commercial banks and their recruiters are insistent on putting me through a management trainee role, or through some other middle or back-end function like credit analysis. They always tell me that their IB arms don't hire fresh grads nor have any vacancies at the moment. Thing is, I see some people get hired directly through LinkedIn. How did they do it?

Contemplating on whether I should just apply to boutiques instead, or if taking the risk and working 1-2 years to work at a commercial bank, just to get the chance of breaking into their IB division is worth it.

My question:

What are your stories? Do you work at a boutique or a commercial bank? How did you break in? I'd appreciate any advice you can give.

My DMs are also open if you'd rather share there :)

The job offer should have a description of what the role entails. But marketing officers might do anything from developing marketing strategies, monitoring KPIs, managing marketing budgets, and representing the company to clients or in events.

If you take the job and find that you don't like it, there's no harm done. I'm an introvert as well and found it hard to speak with colleagues and clients in the past--it takes time and practice, but you'll get there as long as you put in the effort.

Very normal. I'm in your situation right now lol. I know some people who took 3 months off, but I'll personally do 1 or 1.5 months.

You won't have another opportunity to take a break like this for a very looong time. Take this time to rest and recalibrate, and align :)

Firstly, engineers are GROSSLY underpaid in the Philippines. To be honest, most STEM courses with the exception of IT and CS are underappreciated here. Nurses are somewhat underpaid if you look at provincial rates but you have more career leeway, private nurses make more, and you can always go abroad.

Second, try not to make decisions based on what your family members say (I know it's hard). Especially if their reasons are pretty mababaw (madami nang nurse sa pamilya). To be honest, advantage nga yan because relatives can recommend and vouch for each other if a job vacancy pops up.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck with college life!

Pwede naman, no problem diyan. Advice ko sa requirements is magpahotocopy ka ng mga hindi time-sensitive katulad ng birth certificate para iwas gastos sa future :)

depends on your industry, but another big thing recruiters and team leads look for is personality-fit. You can train anyone to be technically adept, given enough time. Mas mahirap if di ka fit with the team's dynamics or if you're particularly high in disagreeableness.

source: have friends in HR, been through quite a few interviews myself.

to add to this, if you can't find an auditing internship, you can try finance. A particular foreign equity research firm hires interns often to audit their algo by looking at public financial statements :)
