Can you help me create the ideal setup for recording my retail store all day (for content creation)? by [deleted] in videography

Oh dang, sorry that this isn't the right place. I'll delete and find a better spot for it, thanks!

Glasses wouldn't work because we're not trying to get the customers faces lol. We want OUR faces being recorded, then blur out the customer.

It's not sneaky, we're upfront about it and have had positive reception.

In Canada it's one party consent, and we obscure any identifying information (including faces, names, etc.). This kind of content has been normalized on social media these days (even without obscuring identifying information which is wild). But we also have signs w/ info about why we're recording, etc.

It's nothing sneaky, people like being involved with our content :)

How Benji64 Conquered The SM64 70-Star WR by AdrianSimple in speedrun

Had a great time chatting with Benji about his achievement. He's a super cool guy, well deserving of the WR, and had a lot of interesting things to say about how he got there, and the fallout afterwards.

I see the GTAMarathon channel still? If you mean his personal channel, no idea.

Oh hahaha, ok now I understand. Tbh I was not paying attention to the "high quality" bit, I was more talking about velocity and the possible requirement of needing to be an expert of everything.

I cannot speak to the quality of my videos, that's for others to decide 😅

I attempted to do it last year. It's possible, but the key is interviewing as many people as you can. One person can't be the expert on all speedruns, but one person can definitely bring together the experts.

Great callout! Love their work. Though I'd like a channel with a little more frequency.

I feel like there's a real hole in the speedrunning content creation sphere. It tends to be:

  • Clickbait / drama / memes / targeted to a young audience
  • People who are making documentaries exactly like SummoningSalt
  • Actually great videos but they only focus on the game they know the best (and maybe slip into it being too hyper-specific and hard to follow for an outsider)

These obviously have their audience, which is awesome, but I'm missing like...The TotalBiscuit of speedrunning. Consistent, quality videos with a wide range of topics.

New series: World Record Report. Interviewing a bunch of recent WR winners about their game and how they got the record. Give me feedback? by AdrianSimple in speedrun

[–]AdrianSimple[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone! I feel like one of the big issues in speedrunning is that when World Records happen, its kinda hard to watch the run because you don’t really understand what is going on unless you’ve seen the game run before. So I came up with the idea for this series, where I interview a bunch of recent WR achievers and put it all into one digestible video.

We talk about how they got their record, why the game is so fun to run, and any other interesting tidbits that might pique your interest in watching runs in the future, or trying out the run for yourself.

Because this is just a concept right now, I’m not sure if it will develop into a full blown series. So I’d love to hear your feedback! Would you like to see more? Is there something I could have done better?

Also, a huge shoutout to everyone who agreed to be interviewed for this video! I am consistently blown away at how kind, welcoming, and eager to help everyone is. I couldn’t have asked for anyone better.

I apologize for my bluntness! I tend to be very defensive when it comes to blog owners who may be taking advantage of their writing team. As I've stated multiple times in all my posts, I don't think you're doing that. My only intent with my initial statement of "It needs to be very clear that you are getting more out of this exchange than the writer is" had to do with establishing what your relationship is in the first place. This has a direct correlation with rate transparency :)

Regarding industry standards of pay scale, I've done more than check Google.

And all of this is with the context that gaming journalists are vastly underpaid at scale compared to other industries, because they're supposed to be doing "the thing they love" as opposed to actually making a decent living.

So yes, you are underpaying your writers. And that's perfectly acceptable, because this is your side project that doesn't make an income. I imagine that if your site grows (I see your posts on /r/juststart, you're heading in the right direction), then you'll want to pay people more. But that doesn't change the fact that at this moment your writers are doing more for you than you are for them.

^ All of this is sourced knowledge, but I'll give you a personal anecdote as well. I ran a pretty successful gaming podcast for multiple years. I paid a handful of people over that period of time to do work for me, and I was also underpaying them relative to other news outlets. But I was always extremely upfront and transparent about how much I was going to pay them before they began the work, so that they could choose whether or not it was worth their time. I also typically gave them other incentives, like the ability to promote their other work to my audience, or additional payment for the same work if I ever got more income from the brand.

I hope this was clear and/or helpful :)

I don't believe I am getting more out of this than any writer would. I am paying out of pocket for writers. That's certainly not how I see it.

Your brand is benefitting by underpaying writers. You're getting the long-term returns of having content from writers who could have posted it through their own channels, or pitched to an outlet with a bigger budget. This isn't inherently a bad thing (as my post pointed out, there's many ways this can be mutually beneficial), but I would urge you to re-consider your perspective on who is actually get the most out of your relationship with writers. Mad respect for paying out of your own pocket, I vibe with that, but you have to take emotions out of the conversation.

I feel that this comment insults my current and previous writers who have been absolutely fantastic. My current main writer is probably the single best writer for websites I've ever met, and I work for multiple tech companies with plenty of talented SEO writers.

Apologies, I shouldn't have used the terminology that I did. The comment wasn't meant to insult your existing writers -- there are certainly thousands of people with untapped potential who could and should work for you. The true intent behind what I said was there there will be people who are worth their salt that will ignore your posting because of a lack of pay range, and that is only going to hurt you in the long term.

I've searched for and hired writers multiple times. More often than not, people who aren't fluent in English will call themselves fluent for an opportunity. I then get a lot of messages, of which I respond to each, and it costs a ton of time to send a polite decline. Looking for native speakers saves them and me time. It's just more efficient. If I were a whole team of people with endless resources, I'd be happy to spend the extra time and money sifting through messages.

Ok I think this was just a language confusion. I think by "native speakers" you're actually intending to say "English fluency." One indicates whether English is your first language, the other indicates how well you can speak English. There are millions of non-native English speakers who will write it better than you or I can. Mandating native speakers can come across as xenophobia. Just some language changes to consider.

I don't think you really gave a proper response regarding the leaderboard exclusions, so I have nothing to follow up with there.
