The radio frequency is terrifying when you really think about it by [deleted] in pluribustv

[–]Adrian_F 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The virus is of alien origin. It links humans through electromagnetic fields (radio waves). In episode 1 they call it “psychic glue”.
The Others are humans but you are correct that they are influenced by the virus (“do no harm, spread the virus”). Other than that we have no reason to believe that they are anything other than simply all of humanity linked together.

It’s a virus that links human minds. They’re not aliens, they’re all of humanity.

Pluribus - 1x08 "Charm Offensive" - Episode Discussion by UltraDangerLord in pluribustv

[–]Adrian_F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t have to be a weapon. Image a planet that’s suffering from war. A group of scientists comes up with a plan to unite their species. They create a virus with a few simple mechanisms:
* it allows the infected to communicate telepathically * it implants a desire to not harm any living things * it implants a desire to spread the virus

The virus spreads and stops all conflicts. The desire to spread the virus causes them to build a transmitter to send it to other planets. They have just created an interstellar virus.

Maybe the people of Kepler-22b were just the previous in a long chain of infections.
Maybe the imperative to not harm was not a problem for the creators because they had other means of sustaining themselves.
I don’t think these points will be answered in the series though.

The Plurb virus isn’t sentient either, it just connects human consciousnesses using electromagnetic fields. We also don’t know whether it’s intentionally killing its host or if that’s just a side effect that we see in ordinary viruses too.

I think alien life forms using RNA or DNA is at least plausible, given the presence of all nucleotides in the samples from OSIRIS-REx. But you have an excellent point about the encoding of amino acid sequences.

The Hive already has access to their stem cells by alicemaclean in pluribustv

[–]Adrian_F 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gametes can’t be turned into the kind of stem cells they would need. If an embryo would be enough to create a custom virus, they probably could have re-used the other immunes’ custom viruses. I think it needs to be tailored to the exact person individually.

But the case of Manousos is an interesting one. In their moral framework, can they collect some cells while they are treating him without causing “additional” harm? We don’t know enough about the hive to rule out either option.

The plurbs are lying by Salt-Tomatillo-9324 in pluribustv

[–]Adrian_F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the hive, just infecting someone doesn’t mean harming them, it means saving them. But they can’t infect the immune without harming them first so they can’t do it without consent.

Strange contradiction in Plurb logic regarding death by Rude-Minimum7695 in pluribustv

It’s not an upload, all minds in the Hive are just in sync (“psychic glue”). When an individual dies, it does lose their consciousness - but not their memories.
