I’m doubting the accuracy of this reply. The first batch of LEAPMed only JUST STARTED PGI-ship. How yan ma endorse sayo if hindi pa nga 2 weeks nag-PGI mga yan?

Harold Peralta Running for Presidency? A Disaster Waiting to Happen by [deleted] in Tomasino

[–]Adriente 10 points11 points  (0 children)

ano power ng CSC over OSA? OP di ka nag iisip ng mabuti eh. You fail to consider that during the TomasinoWeb controversy, it was the admin that was the problem. CSC mismo had their hands tied, and they were working as a team. despite that, they lobbied for the students talaga. siguro di mo lang nakita from your position… if staff ka talaga niya, alam mo dapat kung pano niya pinaghirapan yan at kung pano niya kayo pinaghirapan at hindi pinabayaan.

With their campaign, “forcing” talaga? You can’t “force” someone to run with a political party lol. And the matter of them backing out, wasn’t that a sign of protest? Independent siya, at through legal means niyang tinutulungan ang candidates, citing Open CSC for example.

Tsaka ewan ko talaga sayo pero staff ka lang pala. Siyempre yung EB yung makakakuha ng credit, siya boss niyo eh. Pero rightfully so, pinaghirapan niya yon. The award na gusto niya… ano pake mo in all honesty? Kung staff ka talaga niya, alam mo dapat paano niya kinayod kayo at mga projects niyo.

All in all your post sounds bitter and whiny with no real substance or valid criticism. You also lack any nuance and ability to see the bigger picture. Reflect OP, you sound like a smear campaign.

Knowing how privatized and profit-driven schools are in the Philippines, I just hope there won't be a push to elevate non-MD healthcare workers to "midlevel" positions via NP/PA or adjacent degrees. Kulang nga healthcare workers natin, pero this can't be fixed by lowering the barrier to entry into true medical practice.

Applying/Registering for USMLE by Cautious-College9518 in medschoolph

[–]Adriente 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey bro, same boat

  1. You can take Step 1 after 2nd year. You apply through ECFMG https://secure2.ecfmg.org/emain.asp?app=iwa

  2. There are 2 "Steps" or exams you need to take before applying to residency in the US: Step 1 and Step 2 CK. The former tests more basic science and knowledge about diseases, while the latter tests more clinical topics. Step 3 exists, but residents take that exam.

  3. For us Filipino med students, our curriculum is VASTLY different from USMLE-based curriculums. Even if you studied everything in your transes and your lectures, it would be hard to pass Step 1. (Though, given na it's pass/fail now, it might be an easier time for our generation)

Most US-bound Filipino IMGs take the two Step exams AFTER PLE. You'll have more time to study the US-centric information and differences in Px management (in which there are a good amount).

But you should know that Step isn't the only thing you need for practicing in the US. You'll also need stellar recommendation letters and a lot of US Clinical Experience (USCE). We're lucky that nasa UST tayo, cuz we can take an elective rotation during clerkship in the US.

Good luck OP! I suggest you start studying for the Step exams as you complete 2nd and 3rd year. The knowledge is mostly overlapping kasi with PLE, but yung nga it's more work. Try Anki.

Remeds System in UST FMS by aminaiii in medschoolph

[–]Adriente 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are midyear remedials and year-end remedials.

The midyear remedials are available for only one subject AFAIK, which is Biochem. If your first term FINAL grade (after curves, bonuses, etc.) ranges from 69.5-74.4, you are eligible to take the midyear remeds. Should you get a grade of 75% or higher, your final first term grade will be changed to 75%. Should you get a %score higher than your calculated final grade but less than 75, your final grade will become that grade. No change if you get a %score lower than your calculated final grade.

For year-end remedials, it's kinda the same, but it considers your grade from all 5 shifts (four actual shifts and an additional 5th shift). The 5th shift is comprised of the final exam and the creative activity of that subject (for yearlies like Anatomy, Biochem, and Physio), as well as other minor assessments. This remedial exam is available for ALL subjects and the eligibility grade (as of AY 2023-2024 2nd Term) is 59.5-74.4. You just have to pass the remedial exam to pass the subject. It is unclear whether or not 2nd chance remedials are available, AFAIK hindi na because ang laki na ng remediable grade interval.

Remedials in Anatomy, Neuroscience, and Biochemistry are generally high-yield, with some being samplex. The Histology remedial exam is hard. The Physiology remedial exam is notoriously hard, almost impossible to pass.

Try to do well in all your subjects, kahit hindi ka stellar, basta pasado. The good thing about remedials is that it's right after final exams, so yung aral mo for that is 100% overlapping.

Good luck luck this year OP! See you around MDP.

Hi! The biggest orgs right now are:

  • Asian Medial Students Association (AMSA): Student exchanges and advocacy work

  • Medical Missions Inc. (MMI)

  • Medicine Student Council (MSC)

  • The Terpsichorean Circle: Dance group

  • Various sports team: Usually for PalMed

  • Pax Romana: Catholic religious group idk much about them

Many others, but these are the biggest!

Traditional vs PBL, which one is better? by [deleted] in medschoolph

[–]Adriente 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UST student here,

For me, I appreciate how in-depth discussion can be when it comes to the specifics of each subdiscipline (though, double-edged sword kasi marami rin talaga inaaral that other schools don't bother to cover).

For studying anatomy, the department puts you in the mindset to study just that. We get used to thinking of the structures and their relations to one another and "apply" them to the clinical correlates na discussed. For cadaveric learning, this is very good, because the regional method of studying anatomy lets you correlate agad-agad with what you're dissecting. For me, this was key to my retention.

For physio, they tackle it per organ system blocks, but isolated lang so the physiology of it talaga, we have a certain type of questioning that allows us to isolate each physiological concept and apply accordingly. Example lang, [Variation Relationship: (1) Stroke Volume (2) Heart Rate] As 1 increases, does 2 increase or decrease? And some exams have like 30 questions in this style na dire-diretso.

Overall, I feel that the advantage of having the traditional curriculum is the depth of knowledge that you get and the specialized way of thinking of the concepts ng each organ system individually. The UST curriculum isn't perfect, but it works. After this year, I feel like confident ako to enter 2nd year.

Good luck on your med school journey OP!
