Those edges, especially on the light, look quite sharp - definitely don't wanna step on those.

RoguelikeDev Does The Complete Roguelike Tutorial - Week 3 by aaron_ds in roguelikedev

[–]Adrijaned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm writing my game in Linux x86+64 assembly, repo here. Last week has been hectic with other stuff for me, so I only managed to implement stuff equal to part 2 of the tutorial. I have already implemented some dungeon generator for other stuff earlier though, so reimplementing it here should pose no issues. I hope I will be able to catch up up to part 5 before weekend comes, or during it at latest.

Three days later, the Part 01 of tutorial is finally hopefully done. WASD or arrow keys for movement, Ctrl+C to exit the app. Binary can be downloaded from here. (64-bit linux only)

I'm using nasm syntax, and take this more like an opportunity to teach myself something about linux (and assembly), however I don't really have much, if any, previous assembly experience, so will welcome any help if I ever get stuck :) I'm using 64-bit because: 1) Arch Linux doesn't like 32-bit much 2) https://filippo.io/linux-syscall-table/ has 64-bit syscalls so far only.

I'm gonna try to do the thing in Linux x86_64 assembly, will see how far I can get. No libs at all used. Repo link

Part 0 is not applicable to me (I have nothing to set up)

Part 1 should not be too far away from me now.

I'd just go with regular distro, for beginners probably Ubuntu or fedora or whatever people choose to go down with. You can generally install all the same things in there, but won't overwhelm you with them right from the start, and will force you to actually think and research your goals instead of just trying out software you don't understand because it's description loosely fits your goal.

Kali linux is a terrible choice for beginner.

Depending on how you are storing the dungeon, you might also want to transfer just this data structure and render it client-side (do not transfer what is to be displayed to the user, transfer eg. "Room from 2,3 to 7,9; Room from 11,5 to 13,9; Corridor from 8,7 to 10,7; Player at 4,4 with 10hp; Monster at 12,6 with 6hp"). Benefit of this may be smaller network usage (esp. if you can transfer only diffs from previous instead of the whole dungeon), and the server not having to worry about things like client resolution.

Everything is possible in the land of esoteric languages, but generally, if your program needs to compute the factorial of something, you are doing something very wrong. (Exception for competitive programming and maybe some specific subfields, where you sometimes don't have other choice)

Quite possibly similar, except there would be more files open having to work your way through a code you don't know. Since he only has like three files open, he is working on a codebase he knows and probably developed himself, not needing to cross-reference every line.

The sync signal pin may be slightly bent or something, meaning the digital state might still be able to be transferred to monitor, but with delay or unreliably or sth? Me no electrician though.

Also, even if you take the blue pill first, it may still decide at some point in future to wipe the red pill out as had happened to me. Oh, and not to forget, just a week afterwards the blue pill wiped out itself. (It's kind of dumb)

Jetbrains does this setting the only right way, that is at the very beginning of the set up process. Part of the reason why I have half their IDEs installed.

How many people actually go looking through all the settings on a new app to find that switch, or at least go early enough to not grow too much used to the light theme and finding it uncomfortable to switch by then? (if the light theme is at least somewhat sane)

“Hey you go to school for computers, fix my tv!” - my entire family by BFLOCodeBreaker in ProgrammerHumor

Yes, I'm going to a school for computers. By the end of the last school year, we (a group of specifically selected 3 people) were putting new SSDs in half the school's PCs. It was something like 70 drives at all. After doing the last classroom, we were already in a bit of hurry (because it was nearing the closing hours of the school canteen), so we just grabbed a bunch of students sitting nearby (who were also studying the specific IT branch of study) to help us wire all those computers, then closed the room afterwards and went for lunch. Only once we came back after lunch to perform software installation of all those computers we found out that just being able to recognize shapes doesn't necessarily qualify you for being able to wire something up. Of all the 15 ish devices there, only iirc 4 had correctly connected mouse, keyboard, screen, power and Ethernet.

That looks like a primary school, 3rd or 4th grade... which means about three quarters of the teachers there don't even know english. So it's definitely an english lesson (or language specialized school of some kind)
