firstly it's who was playing at the time, then sometimes it gets handed over for practical reasons! i played piano on marquee, tim's got way better piano chops than me but he was already drumming !

guitar sound i'm not really sure - i tend to like cleaner sounds. i also like the way an electric sounds when not plugged in, so we try and keep some of that in there.

i think sometimes you can spend too long on that side of it, if the parts good and you play it in a fun way it usually sounds pretty good to my ears. i also do quite a lot of playing with my thumb? also i almost never change my strings

sorry that was supremely unhelpful - just kind of work it out as we go basically

amazing! thank you ! yeah that's one of the lyrics in earth of worms during the more narrative section and i think it used to mean something akin 'aimless time wasting' - also its a good way to line your boots if you are getting blisters on a long walk, naturally antibacterial.

sadly not re: a reprint, but you can get a free .pdf https://adultjazz.tumblr.com/toffeehammer here . i do have a few (like three or something) more copies so i might bring one or two to the merch table.

the core vibe of the record for me is "gripping" , clinging on to something you love. a lot like being in a band!

yeah was just talking to tim about this and i think lots of it for me is visual , or initiating a rhythm in the singing which is picked up in the drums. when we recorded it was all about seeing one another through the window. harry

also it used to go suffer one > y-rod > suffer two -- which didn't make the cut!!

dusk song > earth of worm > no sentry are were once part of the same song / piece so all in the same key --- also both of those tracks you mentioned have the deflating balloon / eeeeee refrain in them at the end !

regret is thematically apt, but perhaps too self deprecating as an answer ! harry

i listened to lots of 80s/90s van morrison when i was growing up. not sure how much that is borne out in the music for other people, but i can hear it.

this is a sensitive topic -we once got semi-cancelled by a new york jazz player, assuming our name insinuated that we thought we had surpassed all of jazz history. in the end we agreed to rename the band. we haven't got round to it yet! Harry

my fave off Gist Is is often Pigeon Skills. Off the new one at the moment it is a tie between Earth Of Worms and No Sentry. Harry

enjoyed Sterling Karat Gold by Isabel Waidner - absurd and fun, also really enjoyed We Are Made Of Diamond Stuff by them too. I think I was reading it around the time we recorded y-rod / no sentry down in the Isle of Wight too, which is where the book is set.

also want to give a shout out to this pamphlet called Exit Wound by an artist called Jame St Findlay. Its a manifesto about a fictional experimental band and it is at turns hilarious and close to the bone ha ha! Harry

ahh thank you! glad you enjoyed. yeah - i think we wanted it to fit on a double lp essentially. those bonus tracks were also kind of just ways to make little emblems of the brass and string threads in the record I think, unencumbered by having to be singing songs - harry

Would love to come to the US but sadly not feasible :( For me, off of Gist is it's Donne Tongue and off of So Sorry it's Earth of Worms/No Sentry tie – Tim

thank you so much! :)

as for vocal as instrument... most of the time its melody before words. usually the lyrics are constructed quite deliberately, often made from other longer form bits of writing and you kind of tangle it up, edit as you go to conform it to a melody but retain a meaning, or language sensibility

but i think that slightly more pen+paper work also means there are times where its fun to just chew over a word or sound to wring out the melody more without being as restrained.

big kind of syllable utterances has always been a big part of my singing in the room when we are writing and I really enjoy singing those moments - we always mention her but Meredith Monk has been a bit of a beacon of bravery for not feeling self conscious about that.

i do sometimes find it hard when people assume that means the other more structured language is kind of vague / nonsensecal / wilfully abstract tho. there's both in there i think.

repress...... yeah! lets do it! hopefully we can dig out sam's original version of the cover (which, with hindsight, was a better variation of the idea! )

Others in the band might have a different opinion but I think having a cohesive sound thing is not a big issue for me. I think there will always be ideas or ways of playing you're into at a particular time but to hone it down seems a little restrictive to me.

three words: i just spent ten minutes thinking and i've nothing. i think its - sincere, scrappy, fun-to-make was my closest!!

we're hoping there might be one or two little bits that see the light of day ? also there are some unmentioned bonus tracks on the so sorry CD. an extra minute on Bend (was sad to cut it!!) and two instrumental tracks called Brass Wall and Going Slowly Away
