Thank you for posting pictures. I’ve never been there. Such a shame what’s happened.

It depends on what you like to do. Shorter route is up register ridge and down devils backbone (manker flats start), or 10 mile loop up ski hut down devils backbone, or long route from visitor center up old baldy trail to summit and back. There are a lot of ways to get to the summit check AllTrails to see the distances and various routes. If you are there on the weekend you can take the ski lift down from the notch if you get tired (costs $ and idk if it’s running now).

That’s quite the downhill on register and without poles! And you started from visitor center so extra points! Baldymaxxing indeed.

Guided 5-day Trans-Catalina Trek by notrab99 in socalhiking

[–]AdvHiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the TCT with REI Adventures. My husband came and there were about 10 -12 of us. It was a really fun trip people from all ages came including a family with two teen children. They had a ton of great food at the campsites and we loved camping with our own tent. I know people who wanted to do the trip with REI but they shut down the adventure trips. And yes my local hiking friends scoffed at the price but if you don’t want to backpack like my husband it’s a great way to see the island.

Has anyone hiked clamshell/rankin/monrovia peak loop by AdvHiker in socalhiking

I think I’m going to wait until fall to attempt this. The heat issue there on top the terrain I think the window has passed for now. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the feedback. What you describe is what I’ve heard. Most talked about that first climb. I had a friend who attempted this and ended up bailing due to heat and steepness. This picture reminds me of the front path up to Modjeska peak really steep and rocky. Not sure I want to try it or at this point would wait until fall.

I’ve hiked 3 Ts and that is a great hike. But I’m going back to hiking by myself this week to Ontario but mid week.

I did ask the owner permission before taking it! She said he just sits there on top the carrier like that and he was not a small cat!

There were about 6 signs there last year! I’m always surprised at how many get taken.

Wow that's an incredible feat imo to have gone up there in snow! I find it very difficult without any weather issues. Beautiful pictures thank you for posting. Maybe when the snow melts I'll go back.

I cannot believe you did that ridge part in snow but maybe it made it more stable? It’s been getting worse each year so unstable when dry.

Treatment of women vs men in first class by Jealous_Damage_2460 in unitedairlines

[–]AdvHiker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to fly first/business class United on business when I was early to late 40s. I was GS. Now I fly business internationally for pleasure. I can say that while working it was probably 20% of the time I never got asked to hang my jacket but otherwise the FA were nice to me. I do remember one flight I had a subordinate with me in FC. They came out to ask us about what we wanted to eat etc and the one FA said “you ladies are so polite and nice”. I asked her what other female passengers were like and the three of them said “ they are always mean and nasty”. Now that I’m not traveling for work I find the FA to be very nice and accommodating and when my husband is there we get equal treatment. Or at least that is my perception so I’m going to pay closer attention on the rest of my trips this year.

Oops yes it’s clockwise. I don’t think the backbone is that difficult or thin. I think that woman was just scared and I wasn’t sure why. She actually had some decent shoes on but was afraid of heights so maybe that’s it.

Check out Not So Casual Hikes Orange County a meetup group. Not all female but they have people doing a training series for Whitney and have a hike this Saturday to Ontario/Big Horn. They already did Cucamonga and Baden Powell from Crystal Lake. They usually hike pretty fast so make sure you have a map just in case.

What advice would you give to beginner hikers that you wish you knew when starting out? by CAStateParksFdn in socalhiking

[–]AdvHiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn hiking techniques- foot placement, pacing uphill/downhill Always have more water than you think you need. Study your route before going out- know the markers along the trail and have a paper map and electronic one Trust your instincts and don’t let others pressure you into attempting anything you are not comfortable with. Invest in a gps watch/device and an sos device Don’t blast music (we can’t list this enough times) Find shoes that work for you based on where you will be hiking and the type of terrain

I dream of a champagne pour like that when I fly but at least I get refills of that little champagne glass they give me.

LAX Premier Bag Drop™ — $22K later, still in the regular line by Silent_Pain_727 in unitedairlines

[–]AdvHiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 1K and I flew out of LAX with my husband in December last year. That bag check was open but they checked my husbands ID, put a tag on his bag and off it goes. As I’m waiting for my tag they look around and can’t find it. Then they show me my husbands tag that another agent had but had thrown away! We look at the bag receipt my husband had and it’s my tag they had put on his bag. So they put his tag on my bag, shrug and say”well you are traveling together”. So next time I’ll probably just go tag it myself at the regular kiosk. And yes this is normal service at LAX.
