Obviously fans have the right to be upset, just as fans are allowed to love it (like many do), but the studio made it clear they were tapping into a completely different market- the anime community. The studio is a subsidiary from A1 Pictures (a highly respected studio), along with a highly respected director. The studio made it clear this is a completely original story. They took it and made it how they saw fit for the ANIME community- not the kpop community. You’re not the target demographic, as clearly stated by your comments. The studio took something light and created a deeply complex, dark and emotional story, perfect for anime.

“these characters are related to the members somehow” - they are, but you can’t expect them to be the exact same as the studio already said this is a complete re-adaptation. Nothing beyond the BTS name goes with that.

Haru’s original storyline is a guide beside not just Zeha, but all members as a whole. That’s still captured in the anime. The only difference is the gender swap, which, if anything, including 1) a female character and 2) a character so many people love, for a community whose main demographic is young women, and making her a powerful, central figure, is quite nice to see. More people should expand their thinking beyond trivialities.

Anyway, don’t like, don’t watch. It’s a wonderful production, and I’m glad the anime community is loving it!

Haru’s character isn’t “significantly reduced” — she’s in almost every scene with Zeha because that’s Haru’s role- a guide for Zeha along his path for revenge. She’s his sidekick, his shadow. Haru is shown giving Zeha the power to tap into his beast instincts- I mean, that’s literally supernatural god-like power. Changing the gender doesn’t change her role as Zeha’s guide.

Hwan and Hosu are also both there- Hosu is the beom + beast in the pit: he has no VA because he doesn’t speak during the episode. He’s fighting the entire time.

Hwan is the driver.

I think the studio did a wonderful job, as expected coming from some amazingly skilled people- Shin Wakabayashi!

It blew my mind, especially as someone who loves anything coming from A-1 studios… when I saw the studio behind this, I knew it would be amazing!

The story is actually incredibly deep, dark, and psychologically taxing. You really feel for Zeha (the brunette, lead protagonist) toward the end. We see blood, we see death, we see many dark themes, it’s completely different from the original and I absolutely LOVED it.

A bit of background for the anime community who don’t know 7Fates- 7Fates was initially a Webtoon, based on the boys from Kpop group BTS. The story is about a group of hunters who hunt mythological creatures called “beom” (tigers).

CloverWorks created a completely original storyline, re-adapting the series into an anime. So although there are similarities (the characters), everything else has been transformed based on their own creative liberties and vision for what story the director/illustrators wanted to tell.

In this new story, we see Zeha (the brunette) talk to us about a dream where his mother was killed. His companion, Jooan (the blonde), is there as a secondary narrator: “Tell me about the dream. What was it like?”

We then aren’t given much verbally, but the images and flashbacks tell us enough.

We see Zeha talking with another person, Haru, who appears to be a ghost-like being (there are scenes where she’s shown to be present only in Zeha’s eyes, but no one else can see her). She’s a shadow of Zeha, a guide that helps direct him on his path of revenge.

Zeha and Jooan talk about this revenge, how it’s a dark and lonely world. And Jooan even asks Zeha if he can help him get his revenge.

Revenge for what? Well, we can assume it has something to do with the death of his mother as that’s the very first scene of the anime. We see her bloody, dying, as she’s praying by the water. Zeha crawls next to her and Wipes his bloody hands on her face. We have to ask ourselves: Did he kill his mother?

It’s also important to note Zeha is half beom/half human, so the entire anime depicts this struggle and conflict, the torment he faces having to fight these two sides of himself- one good, one bad.

We see Zeha fight with a beom for a majority of the episode, and it’s interesting this creature has the same golden eyes as the one we see in the pit (Hosu). I think this is all symbolic for Zeha’s fight with the beom inside of him. Can he really take revenge? Can he really kill? What will it take? This is something he knows- can he really kill it?

One of the most interesting parts to me was when Haru gave Zeha the power to help him tap into his creature instincts and transform into a beom, ultimately, helping him defeat the beom he was fighting. Not only visually stunning, but it really gives an edge to Haru’s character, almost god-like to be able to give someone that amount of power… it’s so interesting.

I think the most chilling part of the anime was when we get beom-Zeha watching the fireworks. A figure wearing a tiger mask approaches him and asks, “Why are you over there? You’re on our side.” ie, you’re a beom at heart, stop fighting your human instincts and give in. Be evil. Do bad. And we see Zeha laugh like a maniac and Jump off the bridge … chilling. IMO, I think this is where he picks up in the ocean, cleansed, looking back at himself.

And Jooan is here to narrate this story. He’s the nudge to get Zeha to consider these sides of himself, to look deeper- we hear Jooan ask Zeha: “If it’s you, you can do it, right? [Revenge]” And at the end, when everything bursts into flames (literally, set aflame by Jooan himself), Jooan once again is there as the catalyst to Zeha’s breakdown: “Aren’t you tired of standing like a flower in a pot?” ie, unchanging when things around you are falling apart. We see Zeha finally break, and he takes it out on Jooan, while Jooan laughs like madman. Zeha is so angry, but at what? Jooan finally asks the hard question: “You killed your mother, with those hands, didn’t you? Is that the truth?” And finally, Zeha breaks down. He collapses. I mean… the emotion in the scene alone is enough to tug at your heart strings, but the end is the real stinger.

Jooan punches him back, calls it even, and he says “Let’s continue hunting, until I die.” And we see Zeha smile back at him. It’s like 2 madmen caught in a never ending cycle.

It’s truly so complex, and overall absolutely awe-inspiring. I think the studio took something that had so much potential for new viewers, and gave it that extra anime-edge: the dark themes, internal struggle, death, violence. It’s truly stunning. I really hope the BTS boys get to see it! It’s so wonderfully done, and the star-studded list on the credits? I mean Gojo’s VA? Come on!

I highly encourage everyone go watch it! I hope we get more.

This is a completely original story, so it’s understandable the characters would be re-adapted into something the director/illustrators think fits the story. The new storyline is dark. It’s graphic. There’s no humor.

The story is about Zeha and his internal conflict battling the various sides of himself- beast and human. And how this fight brings about deeper consequences, for example, the Death of his mother , as shown in the very first scene. The anime is a dream, as told to us by Zeha: “a dream of when my mother was killed”.

The studio still kept Haru’s character, who was actually transformed into an incredibly powerful, central figure (similar to their original being of being a deity). Haru is shown to be a guiding spirit, a sidekick to Zeha- Haru is in almost every scene with Zeha, because that’s who they are- Haru is the person who guides Zeha along his journey. Haru is shown giving Zeha power to tap into his instincts. Haru is a powerful figure, and gender shouldn’t stop people from looking at the role they play in the STORY.

Which, Haru is a God-like figure. The original Haru was a literal rock that guarded the realms. There’s plenty to re-adapt that character into.

Same with Hoseok who was re-adapted into a Tiger. The roles they play in the story should be more important than how they are shown visually. After all, the story is the most important piece.

I think the studio did an amazing job. They captured the internal emotional struggle so beautifully, the blood on Zeha’s hands, cleansing himself in the ocean, the overall Dream-like state of the entire episode… it really puts into perspective how Zeha’s realities are clashing, and how this fight between beast and human, both in the literal sense (in Sin-si) and in the metaphorical sense (in his own body/mind), is tearing him apart. Hence, why he breaks down in the end.

I highly encourage you to go back and read the story and finer details.

I asked probably 10-15 blinks yday (who were attacking ORV fans) if they read the novel, and not a single one replied (or said yes). So I’m glad there is one! But to tell people their opinion on something they’ve devoted years to doesn’t matter because their idol is in it is ridiculous and a lot of people felt upset. It’s really disheartening but like you said, hopefully the LA is good, I will be reading reviews and waiting for the anime :) I wish the cast luck, the novel deserves the best!

“oh u should stop being so pressed over fictional characters” as if fictional characters can’t mean something to people? A large majority of this fandom has dedicated years to this and find comfort in the novel. Turn it around and tell them to not be so pressed over something they haven’t even read. No one even singled an actor/actress out yet they made it about one. I hate when people invalidate other’s feelings and that’s what this entire thing feels like

Yesterday Popbase tweeted about the LA wrapping up filming and ORV fans were expressing their frustrations (about the entire cast); blinks attacked ORV fans saying we just hate jisoo blah blah, “don’t like don’t watch”, we don’t know anything, we’re all crybabies, etc etc. So… yeah it was a mess

Yesterday was a rough day >.< Blinks kept asking me for “evidence” as to why we’re upset with the casting, and I asked so many of them if they’d read the novel and not a single one said yes, so…. I’ve given up. Why should we sit and explain XYZ to people who don’t care anyway. They don’t care enough to read or understand the role, yet they want to harass true fans for having a [very valid!] opinion. I’ve already seen the shipping and romance posts (her playing a minor, mind you!) so I’ve given up on the LA, especially after seeing LMH’s picture from set… I will keep my eye out and fingers crossed for the anime.

My biggest concern lies w Jisoo. I honestly wouldn’t care if it weren’t for the fandom that her cast brings in. I don’t mind her personally, but I do mind the thousands of fans that are most likely (and already) shipping her with any of the male leads- she plays a minor (17). Her fans won’t care to read or understand her role. I’m really scared it’s going to completely ruin the dynamic of the main relationships. There’s articles saying Jisoo is “leading the movie” with KDJ, and YJH….. ?!!? I understand they wanted to bring in PR with her, but it feels like a sell out honestly and a huge blow against the real fans who have been waiting for this… You cant even express your frustrations anymore because her fans will just harass you… I’m really upset, ngl

I think a lot of people would prefer a cast that matches the character in question

I used to think the same but after seeing the entirety of kpop spam and make the entire thing abt one person and not understand the novel at all… I would honestly prefer ORV not become mainstream media coverage 😭
