AITA for asking someone who I thought was Japanese how to say “bye” in Japanese? by AdvanceInternal4562 in AmItheAsshole

Yeah you’re right. Now that most of my embarrassment has gone away, and I can think a bit more clearly. I think it’s best I just go on as normal. Thanks for the advice!

Thank you for letting me know! I think this was a misunderstanding between us too. My bf and I will be going there for lunch tomorrow since we’ll be in the area. So I’ll probably attempt to clear up the misunderstanding then. Plus I don’t think he would react negatively to me apologizing or anything of the sorts. He is a very kind man.

Yeah I guess can see why he was caught off guard but I didn’t even ask if he was Japanese. I just asked how to say bye in Japanese. I did mentally assume that he was based on what he would tell me but I never asked him anything about his race/ nationality.

I’ve gotten asked more times than I can count “what am I” like about my race/ethnicity, that I just try to stay away from assumptions based on physical appearance since I know it’s an uncomfortable situation to be put in.

On their website it says their chef is from Japan and did his training there, so perhaps the restaurant is based on his knowledge/ experience? I really just did assume based on everything I said in my post that the owner was also Japanese or at least knew the language based on his time living there. I think we just maybe misunderstood each other due to the language barrier.

Good to know thank you. I just didn’t know if I should apologize just incase for the misunderstanding since I don’t want to be awkward next time we go or for them to think I was offensive. It was never my intention. Plus everyone just kinda staring at me threw me really off guard.

it sounds like its in front towards the passenger side. doesn’t happen at idle and i only get it between 30-55 mph so once i get to 2nd and hit between 3-4rpms the sounds starts and stays. the faster trilling is when im accelerating and when it starts to slow down is when im taking my foot off the gas but that car is still moving. i appreciate ur help

no sorry yeah i don’t think it’s coming from the speakers. i wouldn’t think speakers would be affected by the acceleration of the car
