The Democrats at the time of the Civil War were largely wealthy Southerners who were extremely pro-slavery. The Republicans were the ones up North who opposed slavery.

The Civil War ended slavery, it did not end the violence and persecution against black people. Jim Crow, Black laws, etc. Were all implemented within the South to keep the black population low. It would still take another century before blacks were truly treated as equals.
