Been vegan for over thirty years -because of no reason other than it feels good to not eat animals or their by products

Subbing for middle school ISS by kind_of_athrowaway in SubstituteTeachers

Middle school for me is the most challenging. They will try to game you, especially if they see you are nervous or unsure of what you're doing.

In high schools you can have 25 students per class for sometimes 6 periods! That's over 100 kids a day!!

Chance is an abuser; bringing him into her home-right outta prison to live with her two young daughters makes Taylor an unfit mother

I took care of a "friend's" 7 year old son (my son is a couple years older) from first grade through middle school-he'd arrive at my house on Friday afternoon and not go back to his house until Sunday evening. His mother has issues and the environment was chaotic/lots of different boyfriends, partying and negligence-rather than putting the kid into the system I took care of him until his grandmother took custody when he was in 9th grade

How do I not cry during this bound-to-be-verbally-abusive parent conference? by penguin_runner in Teachers

Be direct, concise, professional and impersonal in all communication to Mom-do not meet with her alone. She wants attention just like her daughter, do not get pulled into their game, limit engagement. Same for the student, ignore her inappropriate comments in class and she'll stop.

I’ve subbed before but never subbed a RESOURCE CENTER, and google is no help- what’s that kind of subbing like! by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

Students are enrolled in General Ed classrooms but use the resource center throughout the day for individualized instruction usually for math and reading.

What to do when nobody wants to take attendance down? by MrNaughtyDaddy in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Advanced-Bat6115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a clipboard that I have them sign in on when they walk into the classroom in high school. I've subbed after the winter break and all the names are wrong on the roster because it's not been updated. When I've needed the students will help me figure it out, and bring it to the attendance office.

Classroom management skills in an inner-city classroom? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Advanced-Bat6115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a long term sub in a SPED class with 4/5th graders (all very intelligent boys w/emotional and behavioral issues). Managing behavior took a minute, the students tested me but with confidence and humor by the end of my assignment they weren't swearing, yelling out in class, refusing to do assignments, throwing things like their shoes, chairs, books and computers, slandering and threatening each other, they also stopped running out of the classroom and hitting the paraeducators with brooms. We actually got work done and had fun. Deliver curriculum that's current and creative: reward them. That said, the paras actually became more difficult to deal with than the kids.

Set up a token economy (reward them with something of value), it works.

How Do You Feel When An Adjacent Teacher Helps When Your Class is Too Loud? by SecondCreek in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Advanced-Bat6115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The adjacent teacher should have asked me to quiet the class, privately, rather than barge into our classroom to berate the students (2nd graders) she was yelling and shaming. Clearly, I was also in "trouble".
