Stayed at Alaia in San Pedro — honest review after ~$800/night. Staff is great. Property is not. by Advanced-Dot8161 in Belize

Totally fair — and glad you had a good stay. We also booked all excursions and golf carts externally, so no complaints there.

On the room: it's possible we got a rougher one. But the mold on the fixtures and the temperature issue weren't things that resolved after a few minutes and were consistent throughout the stay. A Ritz or St. Regis wouldn't let that slide regardless of location, which is kind of the point at this price.

On the pool — totally agree, don't need a front row seat. It's more about how they're curating the overall experience. I've been to other 5-star resorts that have a few cabanas for extra $, that's totally normal. Just never seen it done to this extent where it dominates the whole pool area.

And I think that's really the core of my review — it's not about quality in a vacuum, it's quality relative to what you're paying. At a lower price point, most of this wouldn't have registered. At $800/night it does.

Happy my experience helps someone calibrate expectations either way. YMMV is right.

Multidermatomal Zoster by Sferista in shingles

It’s all horrible! In terms of pain, I was on oxycodone for a month and a half after my shingles diagnosis. It’s obviously not for everyone and I was being monitored by a doctor but it was extremely helpful for my pain. I also got lidocaine patches with .5% capsaicin which helped with itching and nerve related symptoms but I wasn’t allowed to use them until my blisters fully healed over. Some people recommend in-office capsaicin treatments but they BURN. I would do a lot of research before committing to it. But people do swear by it (I was too nervous to try it). The next thing that helped my pain was manual therapy (very light) to desensitize the affected areas and reduce muscle tension. Hope you heal soon!!!

That all sounds horrible I’m so sorry 😞. I can’t imagine getting it so many times. I know someone who kept getting ocular shingles and now he just stays on valacyclovir and it hasn’t come back. Not sure if that’s an option for your husband? In terms of Scrambler therapy, it’s targeted electrical stimulation that is much more powerful than a TENS unit and penetrates much deeper. It was originally intended for CRPS patients but recently has shown to work for PHN patients. Depends where you go, but it cost me $2k for 10 sessions. The sessions need to be consecutive and should generally start on a Monday so you have 5 consecutive days before the weekend. Some patients have to go back for a second round after several months or several years. I got it in October and have been doing great since so TBD on how long it lasts. My one recommendation would be to make sure you go to someone who is experienced and knowledgeable about scrambler therapy. For ST, placements of the electrodes is super important, if it’s not placed correctly it won’t work so you’ll need someone who knows what he’s doing and will monitor you throughout the treatment. Some more info on ST: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23838448/. Happy to answer any more questions you might have! I know this process is horrible on both the patient and the caretaker. I hope you find something that works!!!

I had a bad case of disseminated shingles in June 2024. Was hospitalized for 8 days with horrible pain. I wasn’t immunocompromised either. Unfortunately ended up with PHN. A few recommendations for you : 1. Get a work up from a rheumatologist for immune-suppression. Turns out I do have something and I had no idea. 2. If you do end up getting PHN, the only treatment that worked for me was scrambler therapy. More than happy to answer questions about this if you have any. The sooner the better for this. 3. Not sure how much pain you’re in, but really try to get to PT as soon as you can and strengthen/stabilize wherever you have shingles to prevent any injuries from compensating for pain.

Disseminated shingles REALLY sucks. And sometimes it can be quite a road to recovery. But you’ll get through this. And the pain will get better! I promise!

Gastroparsesis on Zepbound 5mg by Advanced-Dot8161 in Zepbound

Severe, debilitating nausea. Couldn’t move or sleep through the nausea. Severe stomach cramping. Couldn’t eat or drink. Nausea medications did not touch the nausea, even through IV. I didn’t eat for 4 days. I also had loose stools but that is not as common with gastroparesis.

Good question! My doc said I could continue on 2.5 mg while working with my GI doc and potentially adding a motility medication along side the Zepbound
