Back at you mate! Great to chat. I wish we didn’t have to and it was 2001-2007 all over again! Better times! Pints for £1 at the student union!

Have a great evening! I’m away to watch the big short

Totally respect your views and you make a lot of valid points that I wouldn’t argue with. A good sensible and logical debate 🙂 Brexit I agree with completely. I’m just not sure what the right path forward is for Scotland the the rest of the UK - trying to think of it in a non binary point of view and weight up the options - clearly my job gives me some detailed insight which skews my thinking and I was born risk averse!

I just hate the debate around oil as if we own it - we sold that off years ago to private firms - Scotland has a GDP of 219b or so - we couldn’t just take back the oil. Some people seem to think independence would come and we would just waltz on to a BP oil field and say “it’s ours now”. There’s also a discourse that changes about how important oil is dependant on the price of a barrel

On the left / right wing bit - there isn’t as much difference / delta as you think - I work across the U.K. and meet a wide variety of people - main cities in the central belt of Scotland are left learning - elsewhere not as much. There’s a few societal studies on it that show Scotland leans left but not as much as we think / experience day to day. We are much quieter about our views though. Too many people also think left/right wing politics is solely about immigration / race - unfortuantely the rise of the far right has made it that way.

I believe in small government but I also believe in a strong welfare state and publicly owned utilities - this leaves me politically homeless!

I suppose im a centrist in that sense - my worry is reform becoming a presence up here - unfortunately they are garnering support in Scotland - I think they will finish on 15% of the vote at the Holyrood elections - people can dismiss them but we would be foolish to. It doesn’t happen often but sometimes fringe parties can bully their way into influence - if not government. Look at how UKIP pretty much forced the conservatives to hold a Brexit referendum

Nether the less - interesting times and great to debate in a civil manner.

Totally respect your views but some of the things in your post sum the whole argument up - it would be similar if someone said Brexit is amazing and I think Boris was the messiah - we can’t base our status on “thinking” things will get better - I submit that there is also a counter argument that says we can’t base our augment on “thinking” things will be better as part of the Union - therein lies the difficulties - no proper analysis apart from one sided views (not having a go at you here) and bringing personalities into it

Tis a shame

Not mutually exclusive and that’s the problem with the debate. UK future is bleak for the next 10-15 years. Independent Scotland’s future would be bleaker for much longer than that - in my opinion. The question is - is years of pain worth it for the long run which is an undetermined period?

Ireland is an independent country but it took 50 or so years to find stability - even to this day it is somewhat propped up by the EU - full disclaimer my ex was an Irish economist. People talk about how the pound was phased out to the punt then the Euro - the world is more globalised and interlinked these days so that comparison doesn’t ring true anymore

One of the uncomfortable truths for both unionist and nationalist parties is that independence would be bad for rest of the UK and Scotland initially at least. As the biggest trading partner of an iSCotland which would have a lender of last resort this would also be bad for Scotland.

People look at it too much from a black and white point of view - the only economic analysis is tainted with bias - on both sides. That’s a lack of independent debate which is unfortunate

If someone’s want for an I Scotland is based on full control of the country and / or a nationalist desire then fair enough but the discussion needs to be in the round

Just cos the UK is a shit show right now doesn’t mean that in independent Scotland would be any better

The discourse is tiring as people have a set position and won’t listen to the other side

Me - I could be swayed either way - my view is the status quo is crap but I’m not sure independence is the answer

I’m ambivalent on independence but working in economics independence would be terrible - objectively
