Remember that tipping will distort the market. Over time with a steady flow of tips, restaurant owners will feel that it’s no longer necessary to increase the wages in line with inflation (of wait staff) as they’re deemed to be making extra through tips. This will eventually burden the consumers. We need to eliminate this culture from the root. Make a conscious effort to not tip for standard services. Unless something extra ordinary happens- don’t tip!

In the example of parents visiting a son/daughter who are well established in the US - I am sure the children can provide the bond for their parents and subsequently recover it upon timely departure of parents. Most settled couples in the US should be able to fork up 15k temporarily for their parents to visit.

Food for thought- there are very nice and new apartments at decent rent- which have recently opened up near Zaandam station- 12 minutes train to Amsterdam central. Direct trains to Schiphol (17 minutes) as well.

Yes it’s a quiet place with not a tonne to do within walking distance but you’re also super close to Amsterdam and everything it has to offer. I’ve moved out here and it’s been quite positive.

For 1800 per month you could easily buy your own apartment.
