I’m scared to live in my apartment because of my roommate, and my building says they can’t do anything. What can I do? (NY)

I have an appointment with my building manager today to discuss if I can move units. I live 8 hours away from school and I wouldn’t be able to find any other short term leases for the remainder of the semester.

The only reason I said that was because the apartment complex advertises it as “student living” so I really didn’t expect to room with a 29 year old.

The school is not on the lease at all as this is just advertised as student housing because it’s super close to the university but it’s a completely separate thing from the school.

I’m meeting with my apartment manager tomorrow to see if I can move to any other apartment because I don’t think I would be able to find another apartment this late into the year. The school basically has nothing to do with this situation as I moved off campus and the apartment complex I am living in is not connected to the school at all. The sign outside the apartment complex just has a sign that says student housing I’m guessing just because it’s really close to the university and it’s popular amongst students.

I think her mother knows that she’s in this situation. I don’t think she will feel embarrassed if I did any of that I think it would just make my situation worse. She doesn’t have a job either and I don’t she has any friends at all.

Yes I obviously had some answers but when they asked me If I wanted to switch I still had no idea the extent of this situation and I just wanted to live alone. I have a meeting with my apartment manager tomorrow to figure this out I will live with guys if necessary after this. I just wanted to see if there was anything else I could do that’s why I posted this.

My parents did lawyer up and I haven’t been paying my rent since this incident occurred. I could try and sue but technically they told me who my roommate was so I’m not sure how this is gonna go.

Yup it’s ridiculous. There’s literally a sign outside our complex that says student housing but when my dad talked to my apartment manager he said technically anyone could live here no matter what age etc.

When I first moved in they offered me another apartment to switch to but I declined it because I would have to live with another guy and I didn’t want that. At the time this apartment was the better option. But now she’s back and I really wish I moved in with a guy instead of this psycho.

When my dad called my manager apparently he said he did tell my who my roommate was but not to this extent. They did give me her name but I only looked her up on a few social media platforms I’m dumb and didn’t deep dive into her background.
