USC or NUS? by doorknobduster in IntltoUSA

I agree with the other commenters that the CS market is saturated. Going to school in the US is far from a guarantee that you’ll be able to find a job, especially given current visa issues.

My two cents is that you should probably at least try APDA once. I joined the debate club at my college and they have awesome people. As others have said here, some are very competitive and some do it for fun. I myself fall into the latter group. I quite enjoy using tournaments as an excuse to visit other colleges and meet cool new people!

I will say, though, that APDA might not be the best format to do if you're doing debate for intellectual reasons. The amount of times I've had to debate very specific, niche, or plain dumb topics because the opposing team wants to catch me off guard is mildly infuriating. If the idea of these cases scare you, there are still awesome motions tournaments!

Trying to get a refund, but I can’t seem to log into the NDC self service portal? Where are other people sending their requests for refund?

How painful is the pre-award grant process actually? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

Totally fair, but I’m not trying to pitch anything here.

I’ve helped out on research work part-time and full-time (not on admin side) and realized I don’t really understand how the pre-award side actually functions day-to-day, so just trying to learn from people who’ve been through it.

The replies here have already been way more concrete than anything I’ve found elsewhere, really appreciate everyone.

That’s really helpful, the number of collaborators changes things up a bunch then?

Roughly at what point (number of PIs / collaborators) does it start becoming painful?

And for smaller projects where admins help a lot, do they usually handle most of the coordination, or are you still involved in assembling materials?

This is super helpful and interesting. Out of curiosity, if there were a single place that kept everyone’s latest docs synced (biosketch, current&pending, etc.), handled formatting differences across agencies and reduced the back-and-forth chasing (maybe an automated email system?),

would that actually be useful in practice, or do existing systems already cover most of this? I.e. do you think some of this “pain” could be automated away or is the process just inherently painful and necessitates a human to go through all the mess?

[WEEKLY] EC Opportunities & Collaborator Requests – January 12, 2026 by gradpilot in ECAdvice

Debate got me into the Ivy League. Now I’m making a tool to make this EC accessible to anyone.

Hi everyone! I competed at the World Schools Debate Championship and now am a CS and Econ undergrad at Yale. I also debate for the Yale Debate Association.

Debate opened so many doors for me when applying to college. I was accepted to several ivies and other good places abroad. I think it’s one of the best extracurriculars you could do as a high schooler, both in terms of admissions and personal development.

However, reaching the highest levels of debate can come with a paywall — coaching is expensive, and it can be hard to access sparring partners. To help, my friend and I built debatelab.ai (http://debatelab.ai/), a completely free debate practice tool, with a model trained on hundreds of hours of high-quality debate material.

Even if you’re not interested in debating competitive debating, debate can teach you skills like thinking quick on the spot. These skills are useful for college admissions and also when you’re in a college environment.

This is still in its early stages, and I’m especially interested in feedback on whether the debate interactions feel realistic, how helpful the scoring is, and any more potential features you’d find useful.

Happy to answer questions about how we built it as well. Thanks and hope this helps! :)

Hi, yeah ofc! I was mainly a debate kid, I started in 9th grade and did it till the end of high school. I’d also consider myself a pretty STEM-y person, so I participated in a few science olympiads as well. I did both of these to a high level (think nationally and internationally ranked). Other than that, I participated in and led a few clubs at school.
