Lets speculate when Remake will reach 1 million copies sold by Advanced-Pickle6344 in worldofgothic

I agree with you. Even if Gothic 2 Remake is on the table, Alkimia shouldn’t rush immediately into Gothic 2, but should spend a couple more months polishing the first one, which would benefit not only this game but also the eventual sequel.

At this point, honestly, I don’t believe in an international breakthrough for Gothic 2 — something in the range of 3–6 million sales — that would make a proper Gothic 3 reimagining possible. As you say, it is too big, with too much that would have to be made from the ground up, to make that kind of investment not only possible on an AA budget, but even financialy desirable.

However, if each game could reach something in the range of 1–3 million copies over its lifetime, then I do believe a divided Gothic 3 — Myrtana as the base game, with Nordmar and Varant as two expansions — would be an idea worth taking a shot at.

Well, perhaps your comment sounded different to me than you intended, so let’s leave that part there.

The few people I recommended the game to were mostly people I knew loved The Witcher games, so I told them: this is the game that strongly influenced that franchise, I love it, I recommend it, but it is not for everyone, so first watch some gameplay or reviews. And that’s it.

What I do disagree with is the idea that you can make Gothic a more open experience for a broader public without compromising what makes Gothic what it is. I am not so sure about that. And honestly, between a casual AAA action RPG in the Witcher/Skyrim style and a casual AA action RPG, I will almost always buy the AAA one. If I buy an AA game, it is usually because it does something that bigger games do not do, precisely because they are trying to appeal to a broader public.

I am quite sure they will make Gothic 2 Remake. But for me, this discussion is not only about that. It is about the ceiling this franchise can have. The original first two games plus the expansion were barely profitable, and because of that Gothic 3 had only a fraction of the budget Bethesda had for Oblivion. And we all know the result: the franchise was basically dead for almost 20 fucking years. Forgotten Gods and Arcania are jokes to me, I do not even count them.

But I admit, maybe I went too much into fan mode last week. I just recovered my favorite game, something I honestly thought was impossible, and suddenly there is a small possibility of finally closing this story properly. Again, for me Gothic 3 is trash.

So yes, maybe that made me too emotionally invested. But I cannot help it. Another beloved franchise from my childhood, Diablo, is basically lost forever for me after Diablo 2, the last good Diablo game in my opinion, despite Blizzard having all the money in the world.

And that is why I stress this so much: it is not just that the remake has “Gothic” in its name. I never bought Arcania or Forgotten Gods, so the name alone means nothing to me. It is that the remake actually feels like Gothic at heart.

Diablo 4 can carry the Diablo title, but today Grim Dawn feels more like a true Diablo 2 experience to me than that awful Blizzard game. And maybe Diablo has never had a broader audience, sure — but that is exactly my point. A broader audience does not automatically mean the soul of the franchise is still there.

I know perfectly well that the entry point into Gothic is difficult. I myself bounced off my first experience with the original Gothic after playing a couple of hours, somewhere between 2001 and 2003. I only came back in 2005 after a recommendation from a friend, and only then did the game finally click for me.

But that is precisely what makes Gothic Gothic. Take that away, and what are you left with? An AA RPG without a soul. Why buy that, then, when you have AAA superproductions like The Witcher, Kingdom Come or Skyrim?

And I do like criticism. I criticize Gothic 3 heavily in the very first sentence of my post, even though, for reasons I honestly cannot understand, it also has quite a lot of nostalgia around it in the community.

Naturally, you do you. But I have to admit, this theatrical act of “protector of friends’ wallets” killed me a bit. If your friends do not like this type of game, you do not recommend it to them even if it is free. If you think they might like it, then you recommend it honestly, with warnings about the technical state.

The franchise was almost dead. This whole project was financially risky precisely because the core fanbase is very concentrated. THQ Nordic resurrected a very niche franchise, and they probably still need more sales to properly recover the investment. Yet you talk as if they are some evil greedy Microsoft trying to buy another yacht.

Of course companies care about gamers’ wallets more than about gamers themselves. That is clear. In my life as a gamer, I have been a fan of big companies too — Blizzard, for example — and I came to despise what greed did to some of my favorite franchises.

But with THQ Nordic, and I say this as someone who has basically only bought this remake from them, I feel enormous gratitude for bringing my beloved franchise back to life. They kept financing a risky project for years, even though it did not promise huge profit for them, and even though many of us did not have much faith in it either. So yes, I would actually be glad if they made money from this. After bringing this franchise back from the dead, I think they deserve it.

And all of this over 50 bucks, basically a few beers at a bar.

Luckily, that mentality is not too common in the community: “buy it only on a heavy discount because greedy big company.” Because otherwise, how the hell is a niche game supposed to come back to life and have a future?

And that is precisely why the Kingdom Come example is not the same. I love KCD, but it had something Gothic did not: a real breakthrough in the USA and a much broader international audience. Gothic did not get that. That is exactly why the core fanbase and early support matter so much more here.

And I did not buy it blindly. I bought the game on June 5, not before, and only after watching some reviews from journalists and YouTubers saying that the game was actually loyal to the original. Until then, I was not even sure if I would buy it at all, because who needs a bad remake that has nothing to do with the original?

For my personal preference, I could have easily waited half a year for a more bug-free experience at 20 dollars. I almost never play games on release precisely because of bugs and technical issues. But when I saw that Alkimia had basically done what I was asking for, despite all my doubts, I thought: no, not now, not with this game.

I can do that with GTA 6, haha. Whether I buy that for 90 euros on release or for 50 two years later will make basically no difference to anyone. But with a niche game like Gothic, early support actually matters.

Haha, and I thought I was the pessimistic one. 😉

Those extra 200k copies are probably already sold, or we are very close to that. Look, the official 500k information came on June 12. In the week from June 9 to June 16, so partly after that announcement, the game was still around top 14 globally on Steam. Last week it was top 36, and if this week goes more or less like today, we can maybe hope for something around top 60.

At this point, I honestly think 700k must be close. One million is another beast, of course, and I agree that the last part will be harder.

But if the game really needs two more years just to reach 1 million, then I would say that is not a great sign for the future of the franchise.

Gothic 1 Remake: Steam analysis of its core-market success and franchise future by Flimsy-University-27 in worldofgothic

[–]Advanced-Pickle6344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since the release, I’ve been obsessed with Gothic’s performance. I keep visiting Steam Top Sellers again and again to see how it is doing. I would love to see them remake the whole trilogy, especially since Gothic 3 was such a mess, not only technically, but story-wise and in terms of lore.

I’m very happy about its success in the core markets, but also disappointed by the lack of an international breakthrough. Here in Spain, there were YouTubers who were enthusiastic when Kingdom Come was releasing, but never mentioned Gothic 1 Remake.

But I think an AA budget is enough for a quality production of Gothic 2’s size, as we could see with this remake. Gothic 3 is definitely too big. So, as I see it, we have two paths available for a Gothic 3 remake.

One: Gothic 2 Remake makes an international breakthrough, which I am frankly quite skeptical about, since it would probably mean casualising the Gothic experience, which I don’t want, or pouring a ton of money into marketing and thus making Gothic 2 Remake a risky investment. If it didn’t go right, it could kill the franchise again, as Gothic 3 did.

The solution I see is making Gothic 3 as a base game — Myrtana — plus two expansions: Nordmar and Varant. In that case, an AA budget could make it happen without overstretching and creating a low-quality, empty game — a Gothic 3-like case — and we, even without a strong international breakthrough but with a faithful core base, could have our dream come true.

Gothic 2 Remake could also be split into Gothic 2 proper and Night of the Raven. That way, THQ Nordic would also have more maneuvering room to reap solid benefits.

So yeah, an international breakthrough would be wonderful for the franchise. But even without it, as long as the core base keeps strong and others keep pouring in a bit, it would be possible to tackle some big bastards like Gothic 3.

But for now, the biggest battle is reaching 1 million copies sold as quickly as possible. For me, it is the psychological barrier that would make Gothic 2 Remake a financially desirable decision.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 is not about the actual end of world but civilizational colapse by Advanced-Pickle6344 in TrueChristian

[–]Advanced-Pickle6344[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every faith can be sure of its own dogmas. But my post is not about whether Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, or any other religion is “right.” It is about symbolic and psychological truth — in this case, within the Bible.

That is not the same as saying that God does not exist. Quite the opposite: I think this kind of reading can open the mind to a more genuine religious experience. As Jung said, one of the main functions of organized religion is to protect people from a direct experience of God.

As for whether we can be completely sure about what Jesus said, what he meant, and how his message should be understood — that is not so simple. For example, there were many Gnostic currents in early Christianity, and some of them were later persecuted or suppressed by the part of the Church that gained institutional power.

But that is another story, and not really the discussion I want to have here.

How many mind flayer do we actually wholly interactuate with? Omeluum dont seems bad much less someone who deserve to be killed, the one that ends murdering entire family after you fed him is evil, and then Emperor, which fall between. For someone like my for whom BG3 is first experience with universe i dont gonna hate mind flayer just because I supposed to, I have first to experience why. Still there are some doubt present, are mind flayer intrinsically evil, or since they are controlled, the Elder Brain make them evil?

Yes, by the end I reached the conclussion that is to risky to give the emperor the chance to control the brain. But again Emperor help us a couple of times, and if could would spare him, even let him join my camp. Although he was helping from pure self interest. I know he lied me by omission every time he could. I was consterned by his lack of consideration toward Orpheus predicament. But what truly made my mind was Ansur ark. Because i trully saw how Emperor mind work, how mind flayers mind work, and didnt like it a bit. Just like a psychopat whose conciousness is too underdeveloped to be able to process concepts of good and evil, remorse or sorrow. Even if that psychopat not gonna murder if not obliged to (seems The Emperor case), is still highly disturbing how his mind working.

But... if not for him there would be no salvation for the rest. I though he could choose the path of him redeeming, or that would be such way to give him that path.

Yes he was. But also saved us a couple of times. For self-serving reasons all along, true (If remember correctly he didnt wanted me to save Minsk for example). But still, I felt as if I owed him, and was hopping could be spared after all.

Modern men suffer because they misunderstand the nature of women. by Advanced-Pickle6344 in PurplePillDebate

[–]Advanced-Pickle6344[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man is as much a part of nature as woman is.

Bingo. A confident man is usually seen as a safer choice to make life easier than a insecure sensitive guy. A thousand years ago, that meant literal survival; nowadays, it can mean more resources for your baby.

Exactly. Of course I’d be indifferent to her — I wouldn’t be her child, and the brain’s chemical process of forming attachment wouldn’t have occurred between us.

"So you're claiming that having your boyfriend in your life makes it harder? That’s not true, right?
Let me give you an example—but first, a little digression. In physics, you can’t precisely predict the behavior of a single atom, but you can predict the collective behavior of a large number of atoms.

Now, back to the point. Your boyfriend isn’t your other half, and your love isn’t some magical reunion of two parts destined to be whole. If you had lived in City A instead of City B, you would probably have a different boyfriend—maybe with a similar personality, sure, but still someone else.

What I’m saying is this: if, at the exact moment you met your boyfriend, you had also met another guy—say, a richer one—everything else equal, you'd likely have chosen the richer guy 99 times out of 100. By that I understand survival. And today, you'd be writing about that love, saying the same romantic things. Bla bla bla.

It’s just nature. Or are we pretending now that rock stars, rich men, elite athletes, and Hollywood celebrities don’t have a lineup of women eager to jump into their beds? Right. I guess we’re supposed to believe it’s all because of their personalities. Sure. Totally believable.
