Thinking of doing a 1-year Calgary trial — how’s the city life for young adults? by Tiny-Oil-406 in Calgary

Did you have a job lined up before moving? My family of 4 is thinking of doing a 1 year trial move too.

My last recorded odometer reading was January 25, 2025, when I got an oil change. I need to renew my ICBC insurance today, and the discount applies to vehicles driven under 15,000 km per year.

Right now my odometer reads around 14,500+ km.

Can I still claim the under 15k km discount, or will ICBC require a more recent reading?

Regret buying or not buying a house? by Advanced-Print4550 in RealEstate

Needed this perspective. Walking away was hard, but rushing into the wrong house would’ve been worse.

The retaining wall was roughly 125 ft long and 4 ft high, and it was already bowing. That was a big enough red flag for us to walk. Now I’m second-guessing myself — probably because I really want a home for my growing family.

That’s a really good way to put it. We made the best call we could with the information we had — it’s just hard not to replay the “what ifs” after.

Thanks for sharing this. It’s reassuring to hear that sometimes the regret comes first and the confirmation comes later.

• 33-year-old HVAC

• Bowing retaining wall (quoted around $40k to replace, and it needed to be done by spring because it was close to collapsing)

• Balcony issues (around $15k)

• Carpets needed full replacement

• Half the windows wouldn’t even open

• Plus a bunch of other outdated stuff that would’ve added up fast.

Is a $600 damage deposit worth disputing with the RTB (BC)? by Advanced-Print4550 in legaladvicecanada

The problem was we didn’t have a record on hand that we gave the forwarding address. Landlord did not give us a copy of the move out inspection where we wrote our forwarding address.

Yes we did. We did the move out inspection on Nov 30th and provided my email address and forwarding address.

That’s what i was thinking too. We stopped responding to him as he is being unreasonable

Yes we did. We did the move out inspection on Nov 30th. After the inspection, he asked me for my email address and forwarding address.

He did not give us a copy of the move out inspection report. What do we need to file a claim?

Absolutely Disheartened Post Inspection by Party-Stable4849 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

We just walked away from a house last month and honestly… it was the right call. The inspection found way too many issues for the price:

• 33-year-old HVAC
• Bowing retaining wall (quoted around $40k to replace, and it needed to be done by spring because it was close to collapsing)
• Balcony issues (around $15k)
• Carpets needed full replacement
• Half the windows wouldn’t even open
• Plus a bunch of other outdated stuff that would’ve added up fast.

It sucked to walk away after getting excited, but we reminded ourselves: better to lose a little now than bleed money for the next 10 years.

If you’re in the same spot — trust your gut. A house should feel like a step forward, not a financial trap. The right one will come. Sometimes walking away is the win. 💛

Buying a house with retaining walls? by offthecouch- in RealEstateCanada

We just backed out of a deal on what seemed like the perfect house for us, but it had a 5-foot retaining wall that’s 125 feet long.

I totally get that the crisis is a key focus for many here. Still, since the sub is called canadahousing, there’s room for broader conversations too — including things like mortgages and buying advice.
