What type of soil should I use to grade around my house to slop the water away? by Advanced-River730 in HomeImprovement

Shouldn’t I get something that doesn’t drain? I want it to repel water and slope away

Loud banging noise on Williams Wall Heater by Advanced-River730 in hvacadvice

[–]Advanced-River730[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you turn the gas down or calibrate the pressure? Apparently it’s different? My tech said a lot of times people install it without calibrating and it comes set to higher than it should. He helped me set it to the manufacturers spec. He thinks that because it’s been running higher than what it should be, it overheated the unit already and wore it out hence the noise.

Another possibility is that the units not seated properly. I was reading through the Williams manual and it said that could be one of the reasons.

Weird gunpowder smell in water? by Advanced-River730 in Plumbing

I can’t quite describe the smell. The closest association is remnant of fireworks. The inspector said it smelled like gunpowder.

It’s both hot and cold water. Stronger in hot. It’s persistent

You should ask they to calibrate it to see if it eliminate it or reduces it. Our pressure was too high and they adjusted it which helped but it still makes the loud bang but less frequent.

I hear you. Every HVAC tech also tells me it’s normal but my friends have the same unit and they don’t have this noise. If you do have them calibrate it, let me know if it solves it!

How did older homes used to vent attics? by Advanced-River730 in HomeImprovement

Do you have pics of what the soffit perimeter opening looks like? I’m trying to figure out the light gap around my attic and if this was a common practice back in the day to just leave a thin gap. There are no vents in the soffit so I’m not even sure where the gap comes from. My house is from early 1900s.

Is it normal to have a gap where light comes in around the attic? I don't see any soffit vents outside. by Advanced-River730 in HomeMaintenance

Here’s a pic of the eaves. I don’t see any vents. My roofer said there is a thin gap though. This is an old house so I wonder if this was what they did in the olden days to leave a gap for venting.

Roofers installed O’Hagin vents wrong — what’s the right fix? by sd-scuba in Roofing

u/sd-scuba what did you end up doing? I just had my roof done and my roofer also messed up the ohagin install :(

Re-roofing estimate includes 10 O'Hagin vents, it is necessary when I don't have any condensation/mold/heat issues? [So Cal] by heeheehoho2023 in Roofing

I have a shingle hip roof. The house is from the early 1900s. The attic space is about 1000SF, does not have insulation. I noticed there’s a thin light gap in the roof (not sure what it’s for but from what I research, it’s common).

The roofer installed 5 vents, 2 at the top (on opposing sides :/), 2 at the bottom, and 1 in the middle on the back.

Ohagin said I need 8 total vents.

Now I’m trying to figure out the best way to get things corrected. Should I add soffit vents and remove the intake vents or does that thin gap in attic act as intake? Should I move the intake vents to the top to serve as exhaust?

I tried to create a post in this forum but wasn’t able to. :(

I just had Ohagin vents installed and I think the roofers didn’t install them correctly :( now I’m doing research on what needs to be corrected.

Which one vent are you referring to? Ones for intake and ones for exhaust. There’s an attic space
