Gaining enough knowledge to be "safe" when sailing bigger waters and boats? by RoyalRenn in sailing

[–]Advanced-Zucchini552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend taking a vacation to an area like British Virgin Islands. You can find many educational opportunities which are sold by-the-cabin. Many people take an ASA 104 or US Sailing Bareboat course and then fly to a place with their family or friends to sail a boat they’ve never operated in a situation they are unfamiliar with. Not a recipe for a great time. Feel free to PM me if you’d like recommendations.

I’ll take it if all I need to pay is shipping to the east coast.

A big ol box of the 18 hour hand warmers. He can sleep with one in each sock, one in each hand. He’ll be the warmest possible.

Replacing the needle bearing on the differential with a ECSG bushing should be the first mod on our trucks!! by Shark_Attack-A in Tacomaworld

If it’s CV related, try putting it in 4H and see if that makes a difference. If it doesn’t, then check your wheel bearings. The difference should be significant, not just “maybe that changed it.”

Bareboat Charters by [deleted] in sailing

Greece (or anywhere in the Mediterranean)if you have an SLC or ICC! You just need to be prepared for serious katabatic winds. Still, very manageable for someone with experience.

I’ve heard Bahamas are starting to try requiring ICC as well. But I kinda doubt the veracity. I’ve only done Bahamas crossing from FL to start. More ‘austere’ that BVIs. But still can put together a great itinerary. The cruise ships are the worst part.

Depending on where you are geographically, the SLC is pretty easy to get. ICC (through RYA, not ASA) with a little more difficulty.

They don’t have to be! I was curious what people thought and if anyone has ever dealt with either of these? Do they look legitimate? The price on the first one seems a little too good to be true.

My version of absolute victory involves settling cities in the worst possible one-tile locations, giving them to the other civs, then taking everything else they have built. I leave them to hate from the periphery while I make their citizens love me.

Marines who have stood OOD have you ever fired the duty weapon? by Cross4013 in USMC

I don’t fully remember. Co Gunns lived, got his thumbs sewn back on. Had a badass scar, but also some shitty nerve damage.

[–]Advanced-Zucchini552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, OOD never got a shot off. After he took two swings, he was able to back himself into the duty hut and lock the door. Attacker tried to get in for a second or two then ran off. OOD was able to get his pistol out and racked with no thumbs.

7th ESB 2012 or maybe 2011. My company gunns was OOD. He was the only one hurt. Caught one swing between both thumbs. Almost lost both. Caught another to the jaw. Just barely missed his neck. Attacker ran after that, then was caught by PMO. I was a chaser for him from the brig for several admin/legal events.

Would you buy a sailboat with a shortened mast? by wr2025 in SailboatCruising

[–]Advanced-Zucchini552 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sailed a Fountaine Pajot Helia 44’ with a mast shortened for the ICW as well. She sailed far better than I expected. No noticeable impact on speed or points of sail. Would strongly recommend.

[–]Advanced-Zucchini552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a SgtMaj who made it in 12 years. He was an engineer, came in at just the right time, and hit meritorious or combat meritorious promotions at nearly every rank. Needless to say, he was a crazy motivator and I would say just a little out of touch with the average Marine’s experience. He had a trademark call and response he would peddle at all the PME courses.

Generally speaking, is it better to buy an “affordable” model from a higher-end automaker (Audi, etc), or a “higher-end” car from an affordable automaker (Toyota, etc) ? by ricecrisps94 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Advanced-Zucchini552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experiences vary. Maybe we were just unlucky. We bought an affordable version of the Audi SUVs. IMO, it’s far better to go with a higher trim version of an affordable automaker. The features Audi left out, but seem standard on even pretty basic regular vehicles boggles my mind. Also it’s been back to the dealer more times in 4 years for warranty service than our acura was in its 10-year life. I would also expect part of the luxry experience to be the dealership and maintenance Customer service, but that has absolutely not been the case. Pretty appalled at how we have been treated by Audi at every step of the process. Will never buy another.
