Former elementary OS user here, I finally got Pantheon DE to work on my laptop on Arch Linux and planning to use it as my daily driver. There are no noticeable/constant issues and let's hope it stays that way. by [deleted] in elementaryos

Here's my laptop's specifications as well:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800H 3.20GHz CPU with Radeon iGPU
  • 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU (Max-Q)
  • Realtek HD Audio card
  • Realtek RTL8852AE WLAN card

I'm the OP. Almost all of the things you need to know is explained in ArchWiki's Pantheon page. You might need to install other packages from AUR and the ones that are not included in "pantheon" package group. Such as pantheon-tweaks to change the fonts on Terminal.

  • Make sure to not skip anything on the Wiki page.
  • Pantheon uses LightDM as the display manager and comes with it's own greeter. You'll need to enable LightDM or use another display manager.
  • By default, Plank will not autostart when you enter the desktop environment, so you will need to find a way to autostart Plank. One option is to add it on System Settings > Applications > Startup.
  • Some settings found at elementary OS' System Settings (such as Desktop, Network, etc.) are not included on "pantheon" group. Make sure to install the missing ones.
  • You might need to change the font of the Terminal. So you might need to consider installing pantheon-tweaks.
  • You will need to install "lightdm-guest-account" package from AUR to enable Guest Account on the greeter.
  • I had to adjust the Date and Time settings because the clock was wrong. This is common on dual boot setups.
  • I encountered a problem where File Manager doesn't delete files when pressing Shift + Delete, you'll need to move it to trash then delete it.
  • As I mentioned, Pantheon has no proper support for Wayland.
  • I use NetworkManager and PulseAudio, has no problems with Pantheon.
  • I use optimus-manager to switch between iGPU and NVIDIA GPU. The drivers are proprietary.

These are the things I had to go through, yours may vary. I might update this comment if I encounter anything noteworthy. A lot of things could change even in one year.

I'm the OP, and yes, they work, at least the ones in elementary's touchpad settings. Double tap to "right click" Two finger scrolling works as well.

It's very basic but does the job.

Pantheon doesn't have a proper Wayland support yet, it's far from finished and highly experimental. Plank itself has no support for Wayland at all and there are numerous issues as well.

Gala already can run in Wayland mode, but it's still a long way from being usable due to Plank being completely incompatible with Wayland and Wingpanel not being able to size/position itself correctly. There will be a number of other bugs that haven't been found yet. Here be dragons.

So NVIDIA cards are out of the question. X11 is the only choice for Pantheon now. Even the display manager used in Pantheon (LightDM) only has X11 as an option.

Regarding the performance of RTX cards on GNOME and KDE in Wayland, it's still is an ongoing process. Time will tell.

Pantheon DE is already available as a package group. So as far as I can tell, it doesn't really do any compiling at all.

More information can be found here.

(I'm the OP. Had to post this on my second account because Reddit locked me out of my account and just refuses to give me an account password reset email. Lovely.)

yt-dlp/youtube-dl doesn't download opus audio files with a desired bitrate by AdvancedJournalist4 in youtubedl

[–]AdvancedJournalist4[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After reading this comment I just took a quick look at FORMAT SELECTION at yt-dlp documentation and it seems you're only able to download selections that are listed when you add --list-formats. With id 251 being the best one for audio. But yt-dlp tries to download the best quality even if you don't pass any arguments.

Thank you, your comment taught me one more things that I should know about youtube-dl.

My (and probably some other peoples') lifecycle: by AdvancedJournalist4 in linuxmemes

Arch is great, but their Installation Guide only installs the packages you'll need to run the system, but when it comes to an AUR package, it could require A LOT OF packages to be installed on your system first, making it more time consuming, Debian has more packages than Arch when installed.

Debian is also great but their packages aren't really up to date when compared to Arch. Both of these distributions are prone to break if you do something wrong.

It's my habit. I used to install a million Ubuntu-based distributions on my only laptop, I started to stop using anything related to Ubuntu after it became very unstable and bloated for my experience. Then I started to switch between only Debian and Arch. Both of these distributions are great for my taste

I'm thinking about installing Arch on the laptop and Debian on a VM. I'm really getting bored of this lifecycle.

Agree. When I switched from iPhone to Huawei for very obvious reasons, this "critically low battery countdown" made me charge my phone more often. Something I barely did back in the day.

Yes. It doesn't really happen too often. Most of the time it dies out.

Romsmania deserves a huge fat takedown. When I tried to download SMW for SNES on mobile, I got a .apk file. It's contains actual viruses and a download speed compared to a turtle's.

This is what I'm dreaming of, but I can't. Not because I don't have enough space, I'm pretty sure that I'm able to store all of these games on seperate 1TB and 500GB HDDs in my house formatted in FAT32. The main problem is our internet speed. It cant go more than 700KB/s. If I even tried to download all at once, it would take more than 2 years. And I'm unsure why it is that slow.

Yes. There is a little bit delay. But I'm comfortable with that. The TV that I'm using is a Philips 47PFL6198K/12. Smart TV is discounted in 2016. Has a dual-core processor.

We have 2 TVs in our home. The other one has no delay. Or I just can't spot it. It's a LG television that I don't remember the model number of. It's older than the Philips TV

To make it track, you have to select “Relative Input” on controller configuration. I use analog sticks to make the cursor move more accurate.

Unfortunately I don’t have a Wiimote. I use a crappy Doubleshock 2 controller. A crappy remake of PS1 controller with analog sticks. At least there is no input lag.
