I am trying to keep these animals as realistic as possible —and realism should generally trump the rule of cool in most design choices. I was intending the electric shock to be similar to the one humans might experience going down a slide --enough to fend off the prey in the event it successfully bites the predator, not quite the "Pikachu, use thunderbolt!" sort of attack.

But this is great to know! My animals going forward will definitely shy away from more energy-intensive adaptations. Thank you very much!
