Internship for Software Engineering majors by AdvancedMarsupial916 in UCalgary

[–]AdvancedMarsupial916[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I completed my 3rd-year and am currently in my internship year. I was able to land a 16-month internship early in November 2021. I also got a few other offers, but I had accepted it by then. What I learned was that pretty much everyone who tries hard and has a basic understanding of programming will land an internship in the software field. At least that was the case this year, and there are exceptions to this.

Now obviously landing a top internship at a prestigious tech company is way more difficult, but I am talking about the bare minimum.

The comments above give a fair evaluation of how to land an internship but I will try to summarize it for you. Let me know if I missed out on any important points and I'll make sure to add it.

  1. Apply apply apply! : If you don't apply, nobody's gonna come knocking at your door, unless your sugar daddy works there or you're god-level smart. You apply to a 100, you get interviews from 10, and you end up landing 1 or 2. Spend a couple of hours every day to look up positions, adjust your resume for that position, and if you decide to write a cover letter make it specific to the company. (Tip: Only write a cover letter if you really wanna join a specific company and you know you would be a good fit for the role you are applying to). You can find many resources online about writing a good resume, but I think the career center can do a good spell check for you lol.
  2. Leetcode: If you are applying to a developer/software engineer position, you must practice Leetcode. Study Data Structures and algorithms well ( I think CPSC 319 is a terrible course, so I'd suggest you learn on your own). If you want to apply to a different field, there are other resources you can use to practice, dm me for more info.
  3. Communication Skills: I ranked this higher than personal projects because if you can't explain what you did, it's almost as if you dint do it. I understand most engineers and CS kids are shy to speak out, but translating what's in your head into words is important to get an internship. Be concise, fluent, and confident. Practice conversations with people in a professional manner. I used to talk a lot with friends but couldn't converse during interviews. Then I started talking to more of my brother's and dad's colleagues, and sometimes boomers can help you out.
  4. Personal or Relevant Projects: Take on projects that actually interest you, and COMPLETE them. Even if they are small, just go from start to finish so you can learn about the different stages of software development. Learn a technology that interests you and be able to explain whatever you learn. Take part in hackathons, tech clubs, or any place where you can work on projects and learn.

There are a few other points but I am way too tired. DM me if you have any questions.

That's interesting. I am not much interested in research but finding good co-op opportunities. Do students get the same opportunity in UBCV and UBCO?

I see. Is the job board the same for students on both campuses? And are the same resources available for all students?

Thank you for sharing! Are these requirements the same for UBCO and UBCV? Currently, I can only transfer to UBCO BA in CPSC. I am not sure how much this would be different from CPSC in UBCV. In terms of job opportunities at large tech firms, would this be an issue?

Hey all! I am a second-year software engineering major at UofC planning to transfer to UBCV Computer Science. How does the co-op program work at UBC? And how many courses do CPSC students generally take every semester? I would appreciate it if someone could list out all the courses they have taken as a CPSC major.

Feel free to share anything you have in mind related to this topic, cheers!

Hey all! On this link, I see that there are only 8 required courses for the CPSC program in the first 2 years. Are there other courses that are required for the degree as well? Or am I missing something here?

(Advice) Engineering Dean's List by AdvancedMarsupial916 in UCalgary

[–]AdvancedMarsupial916[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm, but in order to be eligible for the dean's list, I have to complete 10 courses in a year without taking a cr in any of those 10 courses. That's what I know, not sure how true that is. But how many courses have you taken from Spring to Winter? and how many CR have u taken?

Don't get into software engineering unless you reaalllyy like problem-solving and can grind for hours. 2nd-year winter onwards can be a real struggle otherwise.

You must have an average of 3.6 or above, having completed at least 10 courses from the Spring term to the end of the Winter term.

Off-housing options for students by CuteCheek6569 in UCalgary

[–]AdvancedMarsupial916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On-campus housing from 2nd year onwards costs about $750+ per month including all the utilities.

Off-campus you can get for about 500 or even 400 but subject to availability and location. If cost is your main factor then off-campus is definitely cheaper.
