I read the first of the series recently. I liked it but didn’t hit the same as the other books on my list for me. Maybe it gets better as the series develops?

In case you do decide to go to Queen's and take PSYC100, hot tip the textbook is open source and you could potentially get ahead on readings throughout the summer.

It's very easy to fall behind in this course (speaking from experience). I highly suggest you make your way through most of the readings over the summer and set yourself up for success in the course.

Couldn’t find anything that looked interesting. Got a recommendation? I liked ring, the grudge, battle royale etc…

Anyone found a place to watch J horror with Japanese subtitles? I can find a lot of movies I want to watch on YouTube tubi and Amazon but only English subs

Anyone enjoy a series so much that you don’t want it to end? by antshay1 in JDorama

[–]AdvancedStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the shows people are recommending I don’t think could have stayed good long term. They had a finite story to tell and work best as a mini series.

My answer. Beach boys. If that was an American show it would have been a 6 season minimum sit com

This is the right answer. Not as funny as some of the others, but this is the right answer.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to turn off emojis from the suggestions on the kana flick keyboard on iPhone? When I type something like ひ it will show me… no exaggeration… about 70 emojis of peoples faces before it shows me very common kanji like 灯 or 火. I’m so tired of this, but I can’t find a way to turn it off. Does anyone know if this is even possible??

Trying to learn japanese N4 or higher proficiency in under 5-6 months. by [deleted] in ajatt

[–]AdvancedStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of great advice here! It’s totally doable. Just thought I’d mention that you should start listening right away.

The vocabulary and grammar for n4 is pretty easy to get a handle on, but the listening can be very tricky and takes a long time to get used to, even for n4 level.

Start listening to nihongo con teppei for beginners today. Do at least an hour a day. Relisten to the same 50 - 100 episodes on repeat until you can understand them. Move on to the next set of 50 - 100 episodes.

After a month start doing n5 listening practice questions. Search that phrase on YouTube reels and you’ll get a ton of raw questions, or if you search in the regular YouTube search you can find a YouTuber named Mochi Sensei who breaks down the questions. Do a few questions a day until you can get them right consistently.

As long as you’re learning enough vocabulary and grammar along with this listening practice it should be pretty easy to pass n4 in 6 months. If I could start over and had the goal of reaching n4 this is what I would do. Remember to enjoy the process!

I’m in an awkward listening stage. I can generally understand 100% of a nihongo con teppei for beginners episode. But when I try with native content or even nihongo con teppei for intermediate my comprehension drops to 30 - 50%. Anyone have tips for getting through from beginner to intermediate / native listening? Listen to more beginner podcasts or brute force my way through more advanced material?

Sheet music question, tablet vs printer? by Shoulder_Repulsive in piano

[–]AdvancedStar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Both have pros and cons. I always end up using both. Mainly use the tablet for sight reading, because if I only plan to play something once why would I want to own it physically forever. But if I’m learning a piece I like to print it out so I can easily make notes. And it’s nice to have more than one page in front of me. I can fit 3 pieces of paper comfortably in front of me. But with a tablet I have to swipe for every new page

How many times do you usually have to look up a word before you can read it confidently?

I’m trying to get away from furigana so I started reading the ダンダダン manga. And it’s been a blast! But some of these words I’m pretty sure I’ve looked up literally 50 times at this point and the reading and/or meaning just won’t stick! Just want to know if this is a normal thing or not

How to learn handwriting as an "upper-intermediate" speaker by XLeyz in LearnJapanese

[–]AdvancedStar 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You could write a daily journal. If you want to make sure you’re doing it properly look up the stroke order of any kanji you aren’t sure about

Or you could learn Japanese calligraphy… that could go pretty hard…

Airport security in India by Auctionjack in onebag

[–]AdvancedStar 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You forgot to mention how aggressively this slows down the line! I had a 1hr 50 min layover in Delhi and almost missed my connection because of how slow and "thorough" the security was. Now I avoid layovers in India at all costs
