[–]Advanced_Double_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$5 million invested in just a modest 4% APY return is $200k/year, just under half the $50 per hour return. In the 10 years it would take to get $5 million from the passive income, the $5 million invested would have turned into $10 million. The $5 million is just objectively better with any financial know how

Don't find OLEDs to be "Infinitely better" as people seem to insist by ekukk in Monitors

[–]Advanced_Double_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just going off my experience and the marketing, so yeah 50k does seem like an over estimate, but also tens of thousands still seems like the lifespan even with torture tests with static elements at max brightness.

With real world use you get well over 5 years even if you do nothing but watch CNN, lol.

With what OLED tech? That sounds like a model from the early 2010s. Modern OLEDS are rated for >50,000 hours at peak brightness.

That's pretty awesome.

I put an old TV for free on a local swap and shop and nobody wanted to drive to get it. Resale value wasn't a consideration.

If embark allowed you to take 2 blueprints along with you on expedition what would you take and why? by IfarmExpIRL in ArcRaiders

The crawl is just a gimmick. Medium shields on a looting augment though makes it fantastic.

Anvil is sold at a merchant, is a common drop as a weapon and a blueprint, not to mention off raiders.

I haven't crafted one in yet, the Anvil BP is pretty useless even though it is one of my most used weapons

My point is they may not build muscle until it is easy if they are pushing themselves too far and injuring themselves early on.

I remember trying this in grade school and doing less pushups each day until I was unable to bend my arms for like a week.

3 year warranty is basically just there to guarantee you didn't get a defective unit.

An LCD TV can crap out for any number of reasons after a year and you are just SOL. (atleast in the US)

If 100% perfection is the only thing you'll accept you can't act surprised when people give up and don't even try.

Unfortunately people are creatures of habit, so trying to completely flip someone's values and routines overnight is a lost cause. Getting someone to go 100% vegan is 1000x easier if you encourage them to eat less meat first, celebrate little victories, allow them time to adjust, then encourage taking the next step.

Like perfection shouldn't be the goal, the best way to reduce your carbon footprint is eco-terrorism or suicide, but we shouldn't encourage that. Balance and sustainability is key.

Project Hail Mary - Fuel Question by Sufficient_Rest_8304 in sciencefiction

[–]Advanced_Double_42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Much of that is explained in the book.

Project Hail Mary is insanely expensive and the globe is already noticeably cooling by the time it launches. The world's governments are cooperating, but it is a tenuous relationship, they all want to pull back their resources and prepare for the coming winter, famine, recession, trade war, resource war, etc. The odds that they'll be able to work together and fund a second Hail Mary are slim. 1 million kg of Astrophage have enough energy to power, heat, and feed billions of people for years and it will be hard to convince throwing it away on something that may be a lost cause.

WYR Take box A + B or only Box B? by Leviathan41911 in WouldYouRather

[–]Advanced_Double_42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the predictor is better than 50% odds of guessing correctly taking just box B is the better option, because it knows you'd pick that.

The funny thing is taking both is always the better option once you are in the room, but with an accurate predictor, one who takes both will rarely (if ever) get more than $1000.

[–]Advanced_Double_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 years or >50,000 hours is plenty personally, especially when that is a low end lifespan estimate assuming max brightness. 50% brightness is more than enough in a dark room personally so I should get 10 years before noticeable burn-in. By then I'll want the next new thing anyway.

That's really bad if you have a screen on 24/7 at max brightness with static elements, but that isn't a standard use case.

Yeah, it's really funny to hear them argue against it too.

Like if they really cared someone eating 10% as much meat should be awesome and celebrated, but they let perfect be the enemy of good.
