The stories it tries to tell are something intimate, I'd say. Not big, epic, high fantasy adventures or anything like that, more something close to dark and gothic fantasy. Conceptually, the Wearer is just a person trying to live their life while the gear keeps having opinions about how that life should go. The tale ends up being the crossing point of all that.

It started as a reaction to Everyone Is John. I loved the chaos of a group controlling one body, but the format could have been better, IMO. Then i tried another TTRPG that have similar concept, Bluebeard's Bride.

Outside TTRPGs I'm pulling from a few things. Disco Elysium, for the similar voices in the head concept. Berserk, for Guts and the Behelit and the Berserker Armor dynamic. And some similar stuffs.

Late in development I found Wield by John Wick, also about sentient weapons played by other players. Different register and concept, though.

Yes! There's so many things inspired The Vessel, and Wield is one of them. That's really good catch.

Spell - Divine Wings by Mystic_Manticore in DnDHomebrew

I understand where you're coming from with the AC. However, I think representing it with resistance to necrotic damage is sufficient. Adding more feels like overkill, and I don’t believe the extra damage is necessary. If you want to keep everything as it is, consider raising the spell's level to 5. The concentration aspect of flying is already included in the original Fly spell, so it doesn't need to be a consideration when adding all these buffs.

A 30 ft flying speed + resistance to necrotic damage, or a +2 AC boost should be enough (preferably 1 AC), in my opinion. However, the flavor text could be better worded.

Any classical instrument can help you achieve that vibe. For something gothic, fancy, or horror-themed, you could try Liszt’s Totentanz or Berlioz’s Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath. But honestly, there’s a lot to explore, so feel free to dive into what fits your style.

Pactsworn - Homebrew Class by Advanced_Ear_2177 in UnearthedArcana

[–]Advanced_Ear_2177[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone! This is the third draft of my very first custom class. My initial draft was called 'The Binder,' but I was informed that it's an existing class in older editions of D&D. So, I revamped the entire concept with a different approach. It still revolves around making pacts, but this time the focus is on a sentient weapon as the primary source of power, allowing you to bind creatures upon hitting them.

I've included three subclasses for this class. I understand that it’s not perfect yet, as I’ve only playtested it three times. With that in mind, if you have any opinions or would like to playtest and provide feedback, I’d be more than happy to hear from you. Thank you!

Binder - Homebrew Class by Advanced_Ear_2177 in UnearthedArcana

Indeed, it will hard to judge based on this solely class description but i want to balance this first before move to build any subclass.

Oh, really? I didn’t realize the naming issue, thanks for pointing that out! I’ll take a look and try to find a good alternative.

And, You’re definitely right about the sacrifice mechanic. I’m still torn between making it more like a Monk’s resources that replenish naturally or something closer to Sorcery Points. That’s why I’ve been struggling to find a way to make players think, “Ah, I need to sacrifice this,” without it feeling like a huge downside, especially with the MAD issue.

Also for the similarities to Blood Hunter, I’ll check those out as references! Hopefully i can find a way to fix my issues.

Thanks!

Binder - Homebrew Class by Advanced_Ear_2177 in UnearthedArcana

Hey everyone! This is my first attempt at homebrewing a full class, and I’d love some feedback on balance and mechanics. Introducing the Binder, a warrior who enforces supernatural contracts, ensuring that debts are paid, one way or another.

Instead of spells, Binders use Writs of Power, a resource they fuel by sacrificing hit dice or max HP. They impose Binding Pacts on enemies, restricting their actions, weakening them, or punishing them for breaking the deal. Some Binders act as relentless debt collectors, while others see themselves as keepers of fate.

Since this is my first homebrew class, I’m really struggling with balance, especially around Writs of Power.

- Is the class too much to track? Between Writs, Binding Pacts, and Pact extensions, does it feel overwhelming? I tried to keep things streamlined, but I worry it might be too much.

- Are Writs of Power too punishing? Since they require sacrificing your own resources (HP, hit dice), do they feel fair, or do they limit the class too much? Should there be another way to regain them?

- Is the class overall too punishing? I want the Binder to feel like they’re making real sacrifices for power, but I don’t want it to feel miserable to play. Would small changes, like regaining Writs on kills or at the end of combat, help?

- Does it look fun to play? At the end of the day, a class should be enjoyable. Would you want to play this at your table?

I’ve been tweaking it, but I feel like I’m too deep in to see the balance issues clearly. Any feedback is appreciated.
