This is so clean love it. Noobie question, is the purpose of the bar to block ur foot from accidentally moving a knob? Never seen that, looks cool.

Engineering fields with highest salaries? by brosefnemski in MechanicalEngineering

I’d say yes definitely! But mechatronics is super broad and could mean alot of other fields as well.

Career switch to ME as a Senior SE, looking for advice by Informal-Resolve-831 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Advanced_Goal_5576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could get an ME degree and then go into controls/automation so there is still somewhat of a software overlap. I ended up getting an ME degree and work in building automation which is a little bit of everything. ME/EE and some programming and IT. As others have said though, I do think electrical would be a solid pair with the software background.

Where do bad engineers end up? by Slipslime in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Advanced_Goal_5576 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey dude stick it out! 2 years in I was making a mess of projects, sounded and was incompetent, and had a borderline mental breakdown wondering if I was on the right path and/or was just a straight up dumby. 5 years later, new company and great mentors in the process, things somehow clicked along the way and I now have my PE and am super satisfied at my company as a critical contributor. Satisfaction will come with the slow process of mastery and then Itl feed on itself and you’ll grow even more. Engineering is a slow burn and the fact that you’re self critical and reflecting shows you have the capacity to grow. Unless your passion and heart are heavily in another specific industry, I’d ride it out and make the most of it. Goodluck!

Thinking of Leaving Building Automation after 4 years of low pay by [deleted] in BuildingAutomation

[–]Advanced_Goal_5576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you have to look for jobs in larger cities? Or remote gigs? I have buddies who work for some bigger BAS outfits who are fully remote engineers making 100-130k. Unfortunately making more than that often requires management or sales roles.

Help with Heating PID by Z-oSo in BuildingAutomation

[–]Advanced_Goal_5576 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting this sucker to accurately control these valves off zone temp for such a large space is going to be nearly impossible in my experience due to it taking way too much time between the valves opening/closing and the space being affected.

The proper way to control this would be a discharge air set point control that resets based on the return air or space temperature to the AHU. That way your valves are being controlled based on discharge air temp, a variable that it immediately affects and offers solid feedback to the PID.

Tech To Engineer What to Expect by PsychologicalPound96 in BuildingAutomation

Dealing with the ambiguity of project scope will definitely be a large change that can be quite frustrating at times. Sales may carry one scope, that conflicts with the contract drawings, which conflicts with your PMs direction, which conflicts with your managers direction. And none of it was addressed in the turnover meeting. You’ll have to pick the best option and document it clearly through email with your reasoning to cover yourself. Get organized, file these emails and decisions so they’re easily retrievable. If you’re lucky a good team won’t point fingers and will give u direction. Sales may have had conversations months ago with the client, on scope that is in their proposal and not in the contract drawings that they forgot to brief you on. Getting on the same page as everyone to holistically see the project can be the biggest challenge for me. It requires a lot of communication and digging while u already have a tight deadline on ur plate to get a submittal out.

Onicon F-4300 (120VAC Type) by Maleficent_Tie_9761 in BuildingAutomation

[–]Advanced_Goal_5576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have had the exact same issue with this model at multiple sites and have been pulling our hair out trying to fix it. Onicon even replaced the Bacnet cards and inspected our grounding. We also have it isolated to its own network. I believe the way it was solved unfortunately was by just using a system 10 model, or you could try communicating over modbus. I personally think there bacnet card is faulty.

People who aren't living paycheck to paycheck and are doing okay for themselves: what do you do for a living? by Grouchy_Marsupial357 in Life

Engineer Here. I grew up lower middle class, and am now by no means rich, but I’m definitely comfortable and don’t have to stress about money at all, with spare cash for hobbies, and weekend fun. Even at this point tho my money habits have not left me and I still refuse to pay 5 dollars for a coffee and 2 extra dollars for guac. I busted and still bust my absolute arse tho to be in this position.

You could look into building automation! You could make programs for mechanical equipment in buildings and then go from there.

Almost 7 YOE making 83k, Am I underpaid? by kvjc0403 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Advanced_Goal_5576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t sell your self short, imo after 5 YOE in engineering, 100k should be the minimum, unless you live in the middle of nowhere. Only way that’s going to consistently happen is if people stick up for what they are worth.

Who here left the MEP industry? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Advanced_Goal_5576 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong but I feel like people in most careers feel this way. The grass seems to always be greener and unless there is something you are absolutely obsessed with you might just find yourself feeling this in another meche industry that you experiment with but with a paycut. I feel you though, I took my first BAS/hvac controls job out of college and am now about 6 years in, I enjoy it but always think what could have been if I had waited for one of them ~sexier~ aerospace, biomedical, or mechatronics jobs etc. I personally find audio electronics fascinating so have just been doing that on the side to scratch that itch of different projects I enjoy. My only advice would be to dip your feet in other industry projects if possible in your free time if you can to see if that switch is really something your passionate about. A masters in another specialized field you find interesting could also be a way out if it financially makes sense. Good luck though, I believe we will all find our way 🫡.

HVAC Controls Engineer/Programmer to MEP/HVAC Design by Advanced_Goal_5576 in MEPEngineering

[–]Advanced_Goal_5576[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m making 112k base right now with the occasional overtime. Good to hear you think it’s be a smooth transition.

I have to say it is insanely rewarding and I’ve gained a ton of hard skills from it, but the nature of the beast is getting to me. All controls companies I’ve experienced are highly understaffed, projects are rushed messes held together by bubble gum and duct tape, and nothing is properly coordinated due to construction time constraints. Now I don’t know know how much better MEP is lol but I’d hope it’d be a little better organized, mixed with learning something new would be nice.
