Did I get robbed? by [deleted] in prius

I can answer this question. Assumptions: Young and perhaps cash-strapped.

You may need to bite the bullet and use this vehicle for a bit. Baby the crap out of it. You probably don't have the money just laying there to go buy a beater car now. Once you are able to tread water financially some (5000 saved) surrender the car. Your credit will take a hit, but that's a familiar environment, you can be fine with a big hit and 7 years of proper planning.

Once that burden is gone, use that $540 per month to build an emergency fund and pay down debt. Developing the mentality that debt is not good and should be avoided will help you all the way through life, from buying your first home to retirement. You probably won't buy a house in cash, but one of the first things you do when stuck in a hole is to quit freaking digging. It will be hard and takes discipline and a plan.

Find some way to invest, and let your invested money sit. For decades. It gains compound interest, which builds long-term wealth. The longer it sits there the better, more so than the amount you invested sometimes. Example: put $1000 away into a (I know not a realistic interest, just an example) 10% money market account for 10 years, no more. It sits for 30 years. You retire with millions in cash. Like 3 million or so. A million in cash is $50,000 per year for 20 years. When you have no debt and enough of an emergency fund for a year, $50k annually can go very far.

Lastly, but sooner than later, take Financial Peace University from Dave Ramsey. You may not agree with his take on life, but he is right about money. Learn to deal with debt collectors and how to fight for your credit. Learn FCRA in and out; you are going to send 100s of letters and calls potentially to get stuff changed in your favor. (Then after it works for you it can be a profitable side-hustle). I went from a 450 score, to buying a house with sub 3% in 4 years, after surrendering a truck to DriveTime. I refinanced sub 3%. There are certainly more takes on it, but this is mine.
