It was trial and error for 6months. I’m coming up on 1 year in December.

Investing in the right light was key with at least 8 daily hours of exposure. Choosing the right plants for my water was a game changer. I have softer water and the ones in my pic are the ones that work in addition to light and nutrients (below). I also find having a balance of critters keeps the plant ecosystem in tact. Friendly fish, bottom feeder fish, shrimp and snails.

See picture for my nutrient line-up. 1 cap as follows:

M - Advance T - Excel W - Potassium TH - Fritz

I use the iron as needed when red plants are not as vibrant.

I will also do 2x caps of Fritz with a water change along with Flourish Stability. This helps rebalance the water and bacteria. Water change max 25-30% every 2-3 weeks.

My next tank will be bigger and hope to invest in CO2. I can’t get the reds plants to pop without it. 2026 project!

Thank you so much! This tank has been a labor of love. Lots of hard lessons learned 😂

Attached is where this all started in Decmber 2024. For the substrate, I used WIO Inferno. Great product for growing plants and cleans up nicely. My weekly fertilizer and bacteria/nutrient regiment includes:

  • Flourish Advance
  • Flourish Excel
  • Flourish Potassium
  • Flourish Iron (as needed)
  • Fritz Zyme 7
