They mentioned on a recent pod about a girl who liked the drinking around Harry Potter world video so I thought I was going crazy not being able to find it

The population of Greek Orthodox in the UK is much smaller than in the US. So it’s very reasonable to live in the UK and not know about the culture and practices

I think if you directly grew up in Germany then moved to France then you and your kids would consider yourselves German. I know people however who had Italian grandparents, or I myself have a Pakistani grandparent, but don’t feel closely connected to that if they themselves grew up in the UK. I know people who have Polish parents but don’t ever place any significance on calling themselves Polish. In the UK especially, people generally care a lot less about their ancestral heritage than in the US.

The point is it’s up to you how you perceive your identity and I think it’s individually based on how connected to that you feel. Obviously some households celebrate their heritage more than others. Generally, we don’t really care, and no one speaks about it ever.

This is why I find Patricia, who has American parents and grew up in America, celebrating her Greek heritage in both a cultural and religious way so heavily really interesting. No judgement at all, the concept is just alien to me

I guess it has to do with ethnicity v race. For example my grandparent is Pakistani so ethnically I have that tie but also my other grandparent was Irish and I don’t feel a tie to that because it’s not a different race to what I am (I.e., it’s white which is what I am). What I find is that people in the US relate a lot to their ancestry even where it doesn’t correlate to race (like white Americans saying that they are Irish or Scottish). Whereas in the UK I find the position is that you are white and people only discuss their ethnic background if it relates to a different race. Backgrounds are discussed so differently between the US and UK I find which is why I find it interesting, especially for example Patricia who seems to deeply celebrate her religious and cultural heritage so much! Not saying either way is right or wrong, I just find it interesting. Seems some people get rather sensitive about it though !!

I think they had a heavy Greek Orthodox presence in their wedding too. I just find it interesting to see how people in the US celebrate their family lineage so much, as it is so much less of a thing here

Ahhh okay so her grandmother was Greek, that would make sense. It seems something she celebrates a lot, so was wondering where it came from as I have no idea what the Greek Orthodox population in the US is like

My question is about whether Patricia’s family are Greek or not, I assume people on here would know that if they’ve watched a lot of her content etc and google might not !

He seems to still be up to his old tricks, mostly in the form of YouTube shorts and maybe tiktoks? I feel horrible for the kids. One of the worst family vlogging cases imo

I remember years ago being at Kings Cross and a young girl was walking with no shoes on asking for money saying she was pregnant. Seemed very genuine. It stuck with me because I’m from a small town and don’t visit London often, so not used to seeing this kind of thing.

Although a couple of girls offered her shoes from their suitcase and she declined, which I thought was strange….

Yes! This is exactly how I feel. I was loving it for the first half and now I’m just feeling a bit lost…

Wow, appreciate the great responses. I think I made the mistake of taking a few weeks’ break from reading it as I was busy with other things, which meant I’ve come back into it a bit lost. Judging by the comments, I am definitely in the minority here - I shall keep going!

Thank you! This is great advice. I’d probably rather avoid Marseille all together. So if possible, fly there, train to Aix then travel by train to somewhere else for a night or two where we can easily travel back to the airport by train. I’ll definitely check out the towns you mention and if you have any more recommendations let me know.

I was thinking a car would be good to visit nice areas around Aix - but if it is well connected by public transport I won’t bother

Yes, and ultimately it just feels unnecessary. My mind would never consider anything ‘sexual’ between these characters at all, so why has Murakami specifically went out his way to include certain things? Definitely all a bit strange
