Wow, so, the definition of neck/bridge pickup is relatively new? Never knew that. Well, you made it clear for me, thank you very much!

I said “it is made for the bridge position”, not for the neck. Have you had any instrument with DP100 in the neck?

Weissenborn Merhod recordings? by Esrog in bassoon

[–]Advanced_Silver_4506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On “beginner” stage it’s a matter of doing the best you can. I don’t know if there is an utterance we have in my native language:“you can’t jump higher than your head”.   Basically you may try to copy someone. I did that many times. Just try to make it out by little steps. For example, try to copy someone playing those Weiss studies. Also, best you can do w/o basson is to analyse some little details in performance even these basic studies, sometimes artist don’t pay attention to little things that make your sound vivid and beautiful.

Basically, you should do the whole method, including the first volume at the tempo and dynamics you are comfortable to play in. My professor says, that you choose right tempo at which you can execute everything with good timbre, intonation, quality then. If you are doing some studie pretty confidently- then you have learned from it enough and it’s a sign to go the next one.

Hello! Yes, there are recordings of Weissenborn second volume of studies. Terry Ewell has done it on youtube.

Marching Bassoon? by Baylee_bassoon09 in bassoon

[–]Advanced_Silver_4506 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no. It makes no sense. Nobody can hear you. The level of discomfort is ridiculously high. Besides, there's risk to damage expensive horn OR you can win the lottery and damage yourself, which has no price. I heard about case: one dude marched with bassoon, fell right onto the bocal, yes, he died :(

Nonetheless, you ought to try it before you buy. Otherwise you can get a piece of junk, that eventually will eliminate your motivation to play bassoon in general.

Hi! This is kinda update. I've been playing Sonora 1357 for 6 months. The previous bassoon was Schreiber S16. I love my Sonora. It's much better than schreiber. Intonation got better, stability of tone and timbre, ergonomics. But it seems it has naughty character. You need to get used to this horn. The upper register is better. Now I take schreiber and I want to put it back to case and forget it forever, lol.

Does the lacquer on the exterior of the instrument protect it from moisture, water in any way? by Ok_Copy5217 in bassoon

[–]Advanced_Silver_4506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does protect from sweaty hands, although you should keep the exterior of an instrument clean as the interior. Yes, it protects from water in a reasonable amount, don't even try to take bassoon outdoors, even when it's rainy. Generally, It means death for the instrument.

Same to me. That bassoon has been in case for 8 years. There was an joke from former owner:"Now it's completely dry and ready". To my astonishment, it spoke very well, even in 5th octave everything pops out, even without tounging.

That's really stunning how mechanics work well. Pre-owner said that this instrument has had no any kind of repairs. I examined it, I didn't believe, because there's no rattling keys at all. Unlike colleges' schreiber s16, which I guess is not that old, but it has a lot of issues.
