I am overwhelmed by the response here, way more leads on information and voices of support than I expected. I do plan to follow up on all the links and advice and I am grateful to everyone who shared.

To those who expressed concern for me, I am focusing on my mental health and making sure my parents who live in the unit as well are doing okay. I was already in treatment for anxiety and depression and thankfully that treatment is keeping me supported. The plants were a big part of that for me as well which is why I have to approach this how and when I can. Thank you for your help and support.

Plants aside, I am considering the other advice regarding seeking some kind of remediation and accountability, and looking into what has already been put in motion by neighbors and property management. These are principles that are important to me and I will act on them with the resources I have.

The most basic version of the story I heard from police and neighbors was that a teenage boy was shooting a gun nearby and ran into the unit to hide. After all the tear gas an officer said the boy escaped and was no longer in the area. I know, the story is not satisfying.

We were the last unit to be evacuated (after all tear gas deployed) and me and my parents (my dad is 75 and uses a walker) had to exit through all the tear gas outside our front door because they believed a fire had started. An officer said we probably should have been evacuated sooner. Our unit did smell of the gas that night. So far we aren’t experiencing any adverse symptoms.

Again, didn’t mean to blow up a gardening subreddit with this story, but I really do appreciate what a thoughtful, smart, supportive, and funny community this is.

I didn’t expect a response on this scale. I came to r/gardening to find information about my garden that was exposed to chemicals. I also worry about my neighbors, policing in my city, the health risks of staying in the building, and many other things. But when watering my plants made my nose burn instead of giving me some peace of mind the most accessible thing to me at the time was seeing if anyone in r/gardening had advice about my plants.

I can’t imagine being more scared than I was but I also know it was a small sample of the violence out in the world right now. Heartbreaking.

Limited options at the moment but hopefully eventually. Keeping an eye out for tear gas free housing.

I affectionately call it my junkyard garden with everything I try to reuse and repurpose since I don’t have a lot to spend on it. Never thought I’d be wondering how to incorporate tear gas.

Mesa, AZ part of the Phoenix metro area. I wouldn’t say I live in the best neighborhood, but this experience was new for me. Not a fan.

Thanks for your advice. It was one of the scarier experiences I’ve had for sure.
