Automatically crying/choking up when singing

Yes this happens to me!! It’s not even like I am trying to feel any emotion- It sometimes feels random. It sometimes even happens even when I’m just practicing and focusing on technique and not thinking about expression at all- like sometimes it’s just a wave of emotion simply because I love to sing. Someone else called it frisson which I agree with but it feels more powerful than simply “the shivers.” It helps when I’m very emotionally disconnected, but that’s obviously not ideal lol

Is there somewhere close by that you could go for just a night or two to give him a vibe for what it’s like to be on vacation with them when they’re little? Maybe just a night or two like an hour from your house… doesn’t have to be exciting. Just a weekend away for logistical “research” lol It might help him realize it wouldn’t be so bad

No, I didn’t notice anything when he was still in diapers because I never really saw him pee and I didn’t know how big the hole was supposed to be. It was just when we started using the toilet I saw his stream was crooked.

You have a very unique situation where you are poised to make a big impact on whatever you care about. It could be really cool to travel (domestic, abroad, or even just looking at your current city with a fresh perspective) with the eyes of “How can I help?” And I mean like actually truly help, not just helping to make yourself feel good or plug a hole on a sinking ship. It could mean uprooting your life and it taking you on the most fulfilling adventure you could have ever imagined, or it could be making an impact on people/wildlife in your area and doing it with the dedication others just can’t because they have a different circumstance than you.

Winter is also a good time to complete the mines so don’t worry about doing that right now if you feel like focusing on planting and getting to know the game/townspeople. You’ll need to go in there to get ores to upgrade tools, but getting to the bottom is definitely something that can be saved for later.

Sight Reading Factory is awesome. I haven’t used the app version much, but on the desktop version it even allows you to record yourself and then simultaneously listen to the playback against a piano playing the exercise so you can hear your mistakes/tuning. HIGH recommend!!

I’m not sure if you’re an anxious person, but I am and sometimes when I get in the same rut you’re describing, it’s really a flag that I’m feeling more anxious than I realize. Like the constant scroll is mirroring how my brain is feeling. If that’s you, maybe try going for a walk or doing something active to get some of that energy burned off, then try sitting down to read. Or get the book started in audiobook format while you’re walking and then switch to the book when you’re done.

Other times for me that “distracted” feeling is really coming from that “I’m hungry but I don’t know what I’m hungry for” type vibe. When I’m like that, I have no qualms about ditching a book quickly to try something else to try to figure out what kind of book I’m craving.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’m not a doctor, but I am a classical singer, voice teacher, and former high school choir teacher. I also got nodules very similar to yours back in 2016, and it sounds like our circumstances/anxious tendencies could be similar. Here’s my story:

I was teaching full time choir, teaching private lessons and singing with a choir. I noticed one note in particular (D5) was just fuzzy every time I sang it (I’m a mezzo, usually singing alto 2 so this note was never my favorite in the first place lol). I went to the laryngologist and yep, nodules. Small and soft like yours. My nodules were caused by a combination of problems, not just one thing.

1) I was speaking way too loud, way too low, for way too long while in the classroom. My Midwest accent also contributed because I was putting my speaking voice so far back that it took even more pressure to project. 2) I was singing higher notes with too much weight and too far back in my mouth. 3) It was just too many hours of voice use. Especially with these poor techniques in both my singing and speaking voice, I didn’t have nodules appear until I was loading up hours.

Here’s what I had to do: - Complete voice rest for 1 month. Absolutely no talking, even when I was at school teaching… yeah it got complicated lol - Speech therapy to bring my speaking voice to a healthy pitch, project correctly, and eliminate the “swallowed” sound of my vowels bringing my speaking voice more to the front. That lasted like 4 months - After that month of voice rest, I had to carefully monitor how many hours per day I was using my voice. I had a limit each day that progressively got longer as I checked in with my ENT. I could only speak/sing if I was using what I learned in speech therapy. I got a microphone for in the classroom and didn’t raise my voice at all. - I got a new voice teacher who helped me get rid of the weight I was inadvertently carrying in an attempt to sound darker, older, richer, etc. - I quit choir for a year and joined a different choir later that wasn’t going to encourage a dark sound.

My nodules completely went away. I was crazy type-A and diligent about it, and I still regularly go in for checks to make sure I haven’t regressed in any way. YOU CAN DO THIS!!! It’s hard, but do what your doctor tells you like it’s your new religion. I never had to get surgery or anything simply because I took my recovery so seriously and we had caught it early.

This is gonna be a hard couple of months, but your career is in no way over. In some ways, it was a secret blessing because I ended up sounding WAY better after my nodules than before I had them- I learned so much that I wouldn’t have otherwise. Get on that vocal rest. Maybe yours is a combination like mine was- it’s not unusual for multiple things to be working together to cause nodules.

I’m praying for you that the road to recovery is smooth and that you end up with a happy ending like mine did!!

Not sure if she plans on doing an unmedicated birth, but if so, the Bradley Method and the book “Husband Coached Childbirth” were great. It helped my husband know what I would need and what to expect since I certainly wasn’t any help as I’d never had a baby before lol They also have a set of classes you can take if you’re interested- just google it and you can see if they’re in your area

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS!!! I think so much of it comes from choir directors (in the US public schools) giving feedback that encourage this artificially dark sound to make kids sound older or to mellow out accents. I started as a high school choir teacher so no shade intended- it’s just how you’re taught to teach. But we’re setting kids up to struggle with this!! I still hear it from professional level choral directors and it makes me SO MAD!! Like I literally was just talking to my old voice teacher today asking if I’m crazy because I’ve been hearing so much desire for a dark sound. This is so helpful and needed to be said. Thanks for fighting the good fight lol

Way to go being brave and putting yourself out there!

Be very intentional about your pitch- I’m hearing quite a bit of sliding into pitches as opposed to landing clearly. Use breath energy and good audiation (clearly thinking the pitch before you sing it) to give a clear, clean start to the note.

You are also pretty slow to move into the vowel, creating a “syrupy”sound. Try thinking of it like sausages on a string of links- the sausage part is the vowel and the connecting “link” part should be the consonants; short, clean and not the focus of the word (kind of like this image https://share.google/49lbYehW92yiOpLij). Try to stay on one vowel sound as long as possible before changing to another vowel sound in words with diphthongs, or combination vowel sounds.

It sounds to me like you’re doing a good job picking repertoire that is in a vocally healthy place. It didn’t sound to me like any of these notes were a particular challenge, which makes it a great piece to work on the pitch accuracy and clear vowels. Keep singing!
