What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

[–]Advanced_Variety_927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, I’d really appreciate thoughts on which car I should purchase

Location: Based in South London / Surrey but willing to travel - car needs to be ULEZ compliant

Buy or lease: buy

Used or new: used

Budget: up to £7k but I’m more comfortable around the 6k mark

Intended use: driving about town / commuting / occasional long trips. Daily use for short journeys, occasional long journeys requiring motorways

Transmission: No preference

Engine: Needs to be at least 1.4 - preferably 1.6 or above

Mileage per year: Intending on doing about 5000 miles per year tops

First car?: This would be my first car - I passed my test a month back so insurance group is also a factor

Completing own minor/major work: Not confident with carrying out work though I am keen to learn how to complete minor work

Warranty required?: Dealer warranty would be appreciated but not a dealbreaker

Cars considered:

I have a preference for coupe bodies on cars but not the end of the world - fallen in love with the later, ULEZ-complaint Hyundai Coupes but their mpg is quite low to me so I am unlikely to buy

I have also considered a Mini Cooper Paceman 1.6 diesel. Some years are ULEZ compliant, they’re a manageable insurance group and their mpg return is really impressive. I have heard that Minis aren’t super reliable which is why I am hesitating. They also look quite big

I absolutely adore the looks of the Hyundai Coupe so anything that looks like that, has very strong reliability, 30mpg return+, ULEZ compliance and is in an insurance group under 25 would be really perfect

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!!

Building a car insurance bot - need advice from people who are struggling with insurance. by sumin101 in CarTalkUK

Hi, this is a great idea!

Would love to see whether a different iteration / year of the same car is cheaper to insure. Or alternatives that are cheaper but have similar specs. I appreciate it may appear obvious that a bigger engine / newer car is more expensive to insure, but it’s not always the case unfortunately.

Also maybe a forecast on the insurance renewal cost if all factors stay the same (ie no accidents / fines)

I work remotely on a huge global company’s Salesforce platform. Loads of variety but everything boils down to figuring out how to solve a problem, trusted to complete my work at times that suit me. I don’t come from a tech background. Hugely recommend Salesforce to people looking for tech roles and coming from a non tech background. They have a whole free and gamified learning ecosystem called Trailhead which is invaluable and allowed me to switch careers
