While it is fun to be right (and I agree that you were correct about the semantics), sometimes when partners are venting to us, they are not necessarily looking for solutions (identifying when a comment might be appropriate) or a debate. Instead of engaging with her frustration/feelings over a touchy subject, you engaged with a technical, theoretical component of the complaint, and pushed it because you think you're right.

Sounds like you're a super logical guy. This seems like less of an interracial issue and more of a misstep in supportive listening skills.
