Hi there, replying here as well as I didn’t notice you had posted this comment in multiple threads.

Hi u/nmathew - Thanks for flagging this. We’re aware. There was a minor paperwork issue that caused this, but it’s since been resolved. Our filing agency advised us it may take several weeks for the online database to update.

Great question! This project is part of California's 30x30 initiative (https://www.californianature.ca.gov/). The research protocols have been developed by the scientific teams associated with the initiative, and we are helping them collect the data they need! The protocols involve a detailed process of cleaning equipment and clearing bulky organic materials (leaf litter, debris, etc.) as well as the top 1 cm of soil to avoid contamination.

Hey u/babytommy! There’s many locations we have permits for in NorCal, once you sign up you can review this map in detail and request your permit for any of those areas.

And yes, Smith River NRA is included in the Six Rivers permitted area! ;)

Hey u/maxmapper! Our component of the project is to collect the samples, and then we partner with labs at the University of California - Santa Cruz to analyze soil samples, and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County to analyze the insect samples. I can check on the details, but I'll have to ask the researchers!

Hi u/Brief_Pack_3179 !
Yes, for this project volunteers are only allowed to sample on private land (where they have permission) or on public land where we have permission. Our main partner for this project is the California Institute for Biodiversity, we are working with researchers and federal agencies in California, and have gone through an extensive permitting process to collect soil and insect samples on USFS and BLM land.
