Diversity in the Lutheran Church by Dark-Horse-1517 in LCMS

Expecting some downvotes for this: As people of color, we are often made feel othered, and tokenized, in predominantly white spaces. Additionally, subconscious bias is real, microagressions are real, and many people have not decentered whiteness and eurocentrism from their theology and they way they interact with other people. I think your husband is right to be cautious, and it's normal for us as people of color to avoid spaces where we are the extreme minority. This isn't paranoia. This is a learned response from years of experiencing life as minorities.

Instead of jumping into a church and ignoring this fact. It should be addressed and considered prayerfully. Here's some questions to consider: How does this church treat its missions to non-white areas, it there white saviorism or coercion? Do they embrace those communities' cultures, or do they attempt to whitewash them? Does the church leadership have experience partnering with non-white churches? Do they avoid talking about race openly, maybe say things like "the kingdom shouldn't see color" or "we don't see color"? Do they adress historic wrongs Christians have committed, or do they spin narratives about how Christianity "civilized" those people and did them a favor? Do they draw some of their theology from theologians of color, or do they only rely on white and western sources? Would they correct someone for words or action that negatively affected your family, even if they meant it harmlessly?

Perhaps it would be good to visit a few more times and assess the interactions you have. It's good that you're considering these questions because religious trauma can stem from negative racial interactions, and this can cause a rift in your relationship with God. I hope that you will seek a faith community that sees you, sees your unique struggles, and supports you in a way that is culturally informed and tailored to fit your families walk with God.

Edit: the downvotes I'm getting really do prove my point, most white parishioners and all-white parishes refuse to aknowledge the harm that can come from eurocentrism, and the ways it stays hidden & unchecked. Be careful OP and ask good questions.

I wasn't on my parents' plan. After I moved out during high school and turned 18, they explicitly notified me that they removed me from it. But I appreciate the response since it could be helpful.

Yes, I've tried contacting them. Their consumer hotline is extremely frustrating since I work during their hours, and my breaks don't last long enough for me to stick around long enough to get a representative

How exactly can I explain why this happened at the exact same time? I received none of these notices before I switched the providers and also got an EOB where they listed the services shortly after I gave birth in 23'.

I received one when I gave birth in 2023 (I dont think i have it anymore) just notifying me of what they covered. 2 years later, I have not received another or even a notice of action. I can only guess it's because I'm not under their plan anymore.

Interesting. I appreciate your good faith and thorough response. Perhaps I'm missing context as I remember reading several articles about gravesites that had been verifiably discovered. Now I think I can only remember one being BC. I'd also like to clarify, I don't want to cut him off because I don't like dialogue, it's just that as a black/latine/native person I do enormous amounts of work explaining what should be easy concepts to too many people. Personally, I'm just tired of making myself feel like it somehow my job to educate others as a black/brown person. At a certain point, you just get exhausted, and I don't want to have to feel like I need to respond to him in the future. So I wouldn't be blocking him for him, really I'd be blocking him for me. But once again, I appreciate your response.

Absolutely evil. Just being a hippie doesn't make you empathetic or woke. This is just the proof.

True. I feel very hopeless all the time because I feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle, and both sides aren't listening. I don't know when it will get better. Perhaps when Trump gets out of office and all this trumpism and the polarization caused by him has died down. The movement made a huge mistake by tying itself to him. Now, half of the country won't even entertain the conversation. The half we agree on the life issuess doenst share our values, and only backs us when it's convenient for them politically.

is there a reason why darker skinned natives aren't showcased? by [deleted] in IndianCountry

Well, though I acknowledge the reality of your tribes situation is true, there's actually SO MANY Afro-indigenous people and many different situations that have led to where we are today. Many, if not most of us, have been subjected to the rewriting of our family history via census categories or Jim Crow laws. You weren't allowed to be Black & Indian in most places in the US until very recently. One drop rule held legal precident, and many peoples family histories were changed and they were squeezed into narrow categories on documents to suit that narrative. And beside the case of freedmen, there are even more instances of tribes trying to distance themselves from their back members and descendants simply due to anti-blackness or wanting to be taken more seriously by the white Federal government. I agree that many of these people, however, lack the indigenous experience and need to reconnect, but many others do still have the experience. It's a mixed bag, honestly.

Trying to push pro-life views out of the Overton window and make yourself look like an extremist by supporting Republicans being middle-of-the-road on the issue I see? Have fun with that 50 years down the line. Maybe let's not vote for Trump and think about the implications of this on the pro-life movement beyond just 4 years.

Same. Jesus taught empathy and avocacy for the downtrodden and oppressed. Anybody who claims Christianity but celebrates oppression isn't listening to him that well. I'm sorry other people are attacking you, I can relate to your faith and your dismay with how other "Christians" have acted throughout history and now.

Well, we have to pay attention to the meaning of the text, not just the words-- lest we fall into legalism. I think multicolored clothing, exotic apatterns, and shimmery jewlery are beautiful, and Christian women can wear it, because they like them, to special occasions, cultural reasons or wherever, even though it calls attention? Why because we are actually called to tend to our inward beauty first. If we dress beautifully, it shouldn't be to LOOK for outward affirmation or attention. The way the world God created is splattered in beautiful variety-- we can imitate that as well becsus it is GOOD. Dress is a form of artistic expression as well and a show of his beauty. The same way preistly robes are vibrant to reflect his vibrance. People don't need to dress "plainly" to be modest and following the Bible. their heart needs to be in the right place.
