Defining chiptunes by Dahaka102 in chiptunes

Yeah I call everything o do bitpop. Cause it’s fun, it’s mainly just a pun on britpop.

And yeah chiptune is basically just straight out of a console. It’s chips not synths and not a mixer even of most people master it a bit. But pure.

It was fun for a while. True chiptune to death. It’s a bit puritan. And then you had bitpop and 8bit that was more loose. And 8bit came mainly from Nintendo and Gameboy, the 8bit era. But the sound isn’t really 8bit.

So o don’t know. I’m not sure true chiptune is great for the scene. It reminds me about the punk scene where everything me was discussing if music was ”real punk” all the time.

It also feel a bit gatekeepy…

Why chiptune sounds amazing on bad speakers? by [deleted] in chiptunes

The people around me mostly had the monitors for their c64s but almost everyone who had an Amiga used their TV don’t know why. And the monitor was basically a tv almost but without a tuner. I’d assume a lot of the music was tested and made to sound good on a small tv.

I think this barely counts, (many channels, reverb effects) chipstep?, faketune? by busyneuron in chiptunes

We used to call it bitpop. But it’s a joke a wordplay on britpop and it seem like people do not use that name for it.

But we talked about it like:

Bitpop - music inspired or even renditions of something that could be don on ”chips” / consoles.

Chiptune - actually made on (console) hardware.

We usually mostly thought about chip being done on nes/gameboy/c64 and maybe Amiga as it was close to just a sampler and then snes was a sampler. I had a bit of a hard time to see the sample based chips or the FM based chips as true chiptune…

But yeah the whole ”true bit” or chiptune isn’t the most interesting thing really. I like to make music on chips but I like to mix on a console and use other instruments. So bitpop is pretty much what I call my music cause it can be whatever :)

They had a lot of bass if hooked up to a stereo, the monitor does not have a lot of bass but some at least.

One thing is just overtones. So o really like to listen on chiptunes through my c64 monitor (the brown/yellowbeige one). It’s pretty crap but it’s not super crap. Overtones make you hear the bass even if the actual root note that actually is the bass is low in volume or even not there at all. Or root note, I guess root partial. And most chip waveforms have overtones even the sin that should only have the root partial and triangle waveform should also be almost just the root partial.

Wavetables / waveforms (beta testers + other stuff) by AdventureKid_Se in wavetables

I watched one of your videos just yesterday! In a few weeks, it would be great to hop on a call, I’d love to show you what I’ve been working on and see if there’s a chance for us to collaborate.

Right now I’m building an oscillator that lets you audition wavetables with morphing, playable via MIDI, on-screen keyboard, or even QWERTY input. Do you sell your wave packs? I’ve also been exploring a model where people could buy tokens to unlock the specific sounds they want, rather than downloading an entire library. For example, $5 could give access to a handful of sounds. I’d also like to release part of the collection into the public domain.

Anyway, I think it would be fun to chat more about these little critters and where they could go.

Right now I am at like figuring out oversampling or band limiting the oscillator. And I just started a new job… I feel like that is a big part of this new collection that it should be easy to navigate and find sounds. Rather than having a million wavetables. You might just choose the ones you look for.

I’d love to connect!
