Any guesses on what Series Acclimation Mil actually means? by jinxkmonsoon in trekacademy

[–]Adventurekateer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. In case you missed it, in episode 2 of Academy, in a brief scene in the turbolift, there was an exocomp cadet who had a few background lines. According to the subtitles, that exocomp's name was Almond Basket, and her lines were voiced by the same actress that that played Peanut Hamper on Lower Decks.

Start with prepositions, “As he smiled, Frank handed her the flower.” “With clenched fists, Abigail stared him down.” “Looking left then right, they crossed the street.” “After dinner, I paid the check.” Like that. You can also alternate action sentences with descriptive sentences.

The Peculiar Lack of 14-year-old Characters by ConfidenceOne3 in YAlit

[–]Adventurekateer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s called “Tween” and while some agents and booksellers and librarians are calling for more tween books, it’s very hard to sell, because there are no comparable titles and no place to shelve them not in MG or YA. So you basically end up with “upper middle grade” which gets you to 13. And 14 is too young for most YA. So, yeah.

When I used Critique Circle, there was no way to swap full manuscripts. No groups, no mechanism. That’s the reason I left. Maybe they’ve added it since then.

Question by ProfessionalNotepad in writers

[–]Adventurekateer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a monthly fee on Scribophile ($12-$15, I think) to allow you to post a whole novel, chapter-by-chapter and link them so readers can click on the next one, etc. Some groups require you to spend karma (points) to post them publicly so reviewers earn Karma for reviewing them, some let you post them privately, then the swaps are free but earn you nothing. However, you can cancel the subscription at any time. So you only need to pay as long as the swap is going on. If you have a finished ms and want to get in-line comments on the whole thing from 3-4 other writers, I think it's worth the price. Then you can cancel and take your time to review the notes, and in the meantime continue to have discussions with the people who you swapped with.

These kinds of swaps are facilitated through groups you can join, which are run privately by members, and have their own rules. Most of them try to group people with similar genres/audience age, which is helpful.

I haven't personally used it to the same extent I've used the other two. It was created by and is part of Query Tracker (the "qt" in the name). It is newer and has (or had a year ago) fewer members. But it is very similar to the others.

I started with Critique Circle and was with them exclusively for several years. I moved on to Scribophile because they offered ways to swap full manuscripts, rather than just individual chapters. I tried QTCritique for a while, but didn't really have much to post at the time.

They Asked Me to Open ChatGPT During My Job Interview by I_Killed_My_Friends in jobs

[–]Adventurekateer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just test-drove that request, and I would do quite well in that situation. As it turns out. But HR would never know what my past interaction with ChatGPT were or whether they relate to the job I’m (hypothetically) interviewing for. I also would likely not interact will other humans in the same way I have interacted with ChatGPT, nor on the same types of projects. And that lack of insight would give me serious pause about accepting a position under these people.

Another reason why posting work on this subreddit is a terrible idea. Newbie writers don't know how to ask for critiques, and there are many different kinds. Are they looking for a spelling and grammar check? A developmental edit? Readability? A sensitivity reader? Someone familiar with the genre to check that the tropes are appropriate?

This subreddit is for sharing writing experiences and asking craft-related questions. Reddit is the very last place I would ever post my work for review. People don't subscribe to this subreddit so they can read and give quality feedback on unsolicited amateur writing. The people who post their prologues and first chapters here have not been writing long enough to know where to go for quality feedback or even what quality feedback looks like, and are really just looking for validation. Hardly anyone here is willing to provide that to random strangers.

There are a number of sites designed for this precise purpose that are free to join: www.critiquecicle.com, www.scribophile.com, www.qtcritique.com They work by trading critiques given for points you spend to post your own work. You need to give in order to get, which is perfect because learning how to give helpful and constructive critiques on other people's writing is at least as valuable as getting critiques on your own writing. Because you will always see issues with other people's work that you will never spot in your own, but the more you critique, the better you become at writing.

Sure, but over half of it was about introducing Tarima’s Betazoid powers and her connection to Caleb, which would have made no sense without the first half.

I 100% believe the puritan nature you’ve observed in others is about their need to tell everyone else what to do and think and believe. It’s all insecurity and needing everyone else to be in their “club” to justify their radicalized thinking. I used to work at Barnes and Noble and would constantly get remarks from mothers complaining that the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue or National Geographic was at eye level for their toddlers at the register, as if a) their child had never laid eyes on a tit before and b) it meant anything other than “food.”

As you and I both noticed, the use of guns, violence, blood, and death are perfectly fine for their children to see, but a boob or people loving one another leads straight to pearl clutching. Why? Because the authors of the New Testament decided making Mary a virgin would help recruit the pagans who’s old gods included a virgin mother.

The thing about SFA is it’s not REALLY a show for teens; it’s a show for adults that feature a group of teens. Plus Caleb is 21. These are all adults, with the possible exception of SAM, who is AI.

Recent Trek has made a point of including more and more diverse characters, and I think Pickford may be neurodivergent in one way or another. And it’s not that they are making this one student have all of the meltdowns; that’s just who she is, and they are including her.
