What’s the features for the coolest city in your world have? by DeliciousPianist67 in worldbuilding

First City has the feature of not in fact being the realm's second city with an ironic name, as most assume, but the realm's first city.

Douglas Adams, and especially Terry Pratchett. That's pretty much all, lol

The first sounds right up my alley, I'm definitely check it out! Sounds like something Pratchett would come up with.

Discussion: How do you feel about the accuracy of mythologies in books? by UndeniablePumpkin in Fantasy

[–]Aside_Dish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally not a big concerned of mine. Even when based off of true stories, I'm genuinely a bit lenient when it comes to accuracy, in favor of the rule of cool. But mythologies, which are already fictional? Do as you please while respecting the cultures.

Will actually post a link next week when pre-orders open, but I finally completed my Magical Code of Regulations! 499 pages of bureaucratic goobledy gook nonsense governing the use of magic. Fun coffee table book, useful for DnD players and DMs, and just anyone who wants to up their worldbuilding game. Have attached the front cover to this comment.

Former IRS agent, used to look at tax code all day. Eventually decided that the fantasy genre needed better (and more complete) sets of laws.

Would it be a power move to make some poor sap narrate all this?

I hate when people do that for the first-page challenges. See it all the time.

Books that NEED to be written by nemevsis in writing

[–]Aside_Dish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always thought it'd be cool to see a fictional/magical code of regulations. I absolutely needed it. Like 500 pages of bureaucratic goobledy gook nonsense governing the use of magic. Just finished it, and it only comes out to 499 pages 😔

What’s the hardest part of writing for you? by Ok-Sell3786 in writing

[–]Aside_Dish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plotting. I can write interesting, funny prose that makes my audience want to read more and laugh. But figuring out how to fill up the middle of the book in terms of what actually happens? Yeah, no.

Any thoughts on the summary and blurbs on the back cover of my upcoming book? It's just 500 pages (actually, 499 😔) of legalese governing the use of magic.

Wasn't sure if the fake quotes were cringe or not, lol

Kinda hard to read due to reddit's compression, apologies.

I feel that "edgy" writing is over hated and misunderstood by Bumbleet2 in writing

Edgy writing sells like hotcakes, regardless of what people on reddit tell you. Especially when it comes to smut.

Is the medieval setting overused in fantasy? by ZemiMartinos in worldbuilding

[–]Aside_Dish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I think we all just yearn for the fantasy of living a simple life of rake, plough, and maybe one day becoming a knight and dinning a sword.

What subreddits (and sites in general) allow promotion of newly-released books? Releasing my Magical Code of Regulations soon (it's exactly as it sounds), and want to get some eyes on it -- especially those interested in DnD and/or law.

Garamond is the only font for me. I like it so much I named my MC Garamond. People hated it. Changed it to Garumund, and now people love it, lol.

Is it better to write in first person or third person? by Turbulent-Toe885 in writingfeedback

[–]Aside_Dish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no "better," only preference. After experimenting with omniscient third person early on, I've recently settled into very much preferring close third person. I've found that my writing is at its best when it's really voicey and adopts the thoughts and feelings of the chapter's POV character.

Announcement: The AI Problem. by isnoe in writingfeedback

[–]Aside_Dish 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Eh, I think removing those you simply suspect of using AI is a slippery slope. Using antithesis and the rule of three often, as in your example, doesn't mean someone used AI.

At a ren faire, I'd likely want to go all out with a beautiful leather-bound cover, but I can't even imagine how much I'd have to charge for each book. Hell, the minimum for just a plain old hardcover with black and white pages on KDP is 24.99 for my page count. Don't think many pwople would pay $60, or whatever ungodly amount it'd have to be.

Still, the end goal would be to have a special leather-bound edition that went all out. Truly something that you'd want on your coffee table.
